geday all heres my sr (m.l.c.)project iv started with a 1978 sr 500.basicly stock with a few small mods over the years.. good old girl but seen beter days.in short she was every day transport for about 5 years ...then lived behind th shed for a few more. but now! the plan is to build a cafe racer i want her to look her age, no show bike polishing. want to improve lights and brakes . breathing beter would be a big plus too... yes every one thinks im nuts “its a 30 year old yamy, hahaha” has been heard more than once ..is it posable that im sane & every one else is not..LOL so.. mods so far about 6 months work mosttly spent chasing elusive bits and peices..lol...,xs 650 298mm front rotors ,xs 750 calipers, xz 550 front master, xs 850 160mm{i think}drilled rear rotor, cam resprayed & ground ,foam air filter ,pod crank breather ,bronz swing arm bushes & built up pivot ,colapsed rear hub (cast wheel} rebuilt ,hand made clipons ,tank,,seat shroud ,modified seat, stone style fairing ,xj 650 8” head light and mount ,k7 750 honda tacho in sr housing , shaved and filled front guard..all work except th cam done by me..total cost about ..$600 the bad news ,left a rag on my new tank after removeing the master cylinder..and so it is missing some paint.lol..yes im a nob! on the bright side i was never hapy with the cutouts in the front of it so il strip it and redo the whole thing with biger receses for the clipons.....still heaps to do but at least its running and begining to look th way i want

I'll be interested to see where this goes. I'm liking the basic shape of the tank and I gotta say that I'm always envious of people who can fabricate their own parts. Good work mate, keep it up. (That poor thing lying in the background. . . It looks like it was dredged up from a dam)

Did you fabricat the tank mate? Awesome if you did. Whole thing looks really good.
I took a ride from Sydney to Orange on my cafe racer. Every bloke going past me on a bmw f650, or GS, or tourer, or goldwing etc etc Had a good look, or a wave (maybe because it is so loud).
When you're out there, they all want one, tehy just know their backs/knees won't allow it.

Briefly, How did you build the tank? Styrofoam covered in Fibreglass then pour in Acetone to dissolve the foam?
[ ,hand made clipons ,tank,,seat shroud ,

I like the empty Coronas& TEDS in the background of the first pic that always means contemplation & contentment , its agreat way to sink a couple of beers (I always do it when my team starts to lose ) that way the first couple arent wasted on a bad mood cheers Dave. PS by the look of that project there will be a few more to sink I bet !

Mate there is no better fun than building up a bike from bits over a period of time & then that anticipation on startup through to ride day (not normally the same day as mine are usually minus a few important things!) But thats OK to spread it out abit as its all fun . Then there is the breakdown period (thats where the mobile phone , wife & trailer come in real handy ) All is good & learning is a must cheers from Dave.

well its fathers day weekend so i spent some of the weekend relaxing with a hammer and dolly ,welder ,sander and some wet and dry sand paper .the result being my fuel was tank was striped and cut up.....and now sports larger cutouts in the front to clear the clipons...its only to undercoat stage ..so still needs final blocking out before paint....i havent decided on a colour yet tho ..i liked the glacier white on the tank ...but the black on the fairing is nice too...........so undercoat grey it is p.s. dont try this at home guys...unles you know what your doing...fuel tanks do tend to blow up and kill ya if not treated corectly
