Alright, my dumb question for today. (Remember - n00b alert)
Do you ever stand there, with all the bits and peices for the bottom end in front of you and think. "Shit.... how does this go together again?"

Stew, it just gets better and better. I can't believe those cast aluminum parts looked anywhere near that good when they were brand new. Marlon, many years of experience have shown me that manufacturers, no matter what the product, always throw in lots of unnecessary parts. Otherwise why would I have a drawer full of pieces left over from repairing egg-beaters, pianos, VCRs, clocks, washing machines, dryers, bicycles, engines and transmissions? This time when I took my engine down I actually followed most of the instructions in the service manual, including laying the parts out on the bench in the order I took them off. Let's see if I can put them together in reverse order and not have anything left over this time. I also downloaded the parts diagrams so I can see all the parts and how they fit together. Looking at the diagrams I'm always surprised how few parts an SR has. Imagine what the parts diagrams look like for a Vincent Black Shadow.

Yes, if in doubt refer to the paperwork! Or ask! SR

Just to keep things moving along...very slowly at the moment...here's a pic of my rear hub...ignore the 17" rim and the spokes and the swing arm and the shocks...and the tyre...and the disc... Heh,, heh... SR

What hub is that? Looks great!
Never mind, I just looked through the rest of the post and figured it out.

It's sitting in place but not properly mounted. It will probably require some machining on it to fit properly and the swing arm is being replaced by a wider one in any case...so no fitment details yet. It's a nice looking disc hub with a cush drive and I plan to fit a floating rear disc to it when all the mounting issues are sorted...including the 18" rim that will be fitted etc. I would say that the rim offset will end up different to the standard Suzuki alignment, not surprisingly... I am also planning to use a 20mm axle as well...as standard sizing for the DR. Not sure why, but I often end up using a Suzuki brake on one end or the other on the cafe racers... SR

I actually decided to do a bit more on the New Cafe Racer today...I have started on the front caliper adapter to fit the R6 calipers to the 330mm disc and wire wheel...all good fun. I am using 2024 alloy as the material for the adapter. It machines quite nicely and won't be as heavy as it would be if it was made from 7075.. Here are a few pics of what I have done so far...need to buy a 10mmx1.25 pitch tap...always something to slow you down... SR

Hey Stew, Do you think the caliper would clear on a 320mm disc? I checked the other day and it simply won't clear with a stock disc, no matter the disc offset. The reason I ask is because I have a pair of 320mm discs from a Ducati.

It may work on a wheel with a narrower hub than the Talon one that I have on my bike. I made a false centre to allow the disc to fit the wheel and then measured everything up from there...one thing mine had that yours may not is that I have fitted R6 forks and used the same offset as an SR but R6 fork spacing on the triple clamps. The best way is to try it out...do you plan to use two discs? SR

With the 320mm discs, I would use just one. What I was trying the R6 calipers on was a XS650 front hub & forks. With a stock disc, the calipers just don't clear. I was thinking that maybe, with the 320mm disc, the caliper may clear as the spokes are closer to the center of the wheel. Judging from what I saw, I think it would. I may have to give it a go and see.

Yes that is probably the only sure way...is there much difference in the centre where it mounts to the wheel? Here is a drawing of the offset on the new disc...more than the standard Fireblade one. Here's the spoke clearance...fairly difficult to see clearly. SR
