Hi, I have been building a new cafe racer for a couple of years now...to hopefully eclipse my black one. sr500forum.bravehost.com/cafeproject.htmlThe basic spec for the bike was to look better than my black cafe racer and to do what that one didn't...200KMH or more. It has to have adjustable suspension at both ends and other niceities, yet be (semi) legal..blinkers etc. Not too loud...my hearings suffered from open meggas etc. for many years now... It has to look integrated and still look period in a way. Wire wheels but with discs...not drums...a hard decision for me...WM2 at the front and maybe WM4 at the rear...black steel swingarm...not alloy...not SR either...single, large diameter front disc as well. The steering is lighter and it just feels better in my opinion...really small rear disc..as small as I can arrange for it... Colour, not black and gold..another hard decision....use mainly Yam parts as much as possible to be true to the marque...not for everything mind you... So far I've had the alloy tank and seat made for me by 'Bernie the Magician' to my design....massive triple clamps to suit the 41mm R6 forks...a wheel with a Talon twin disc hub (...hard to get)...just in case...heh, heh...and milled two-piece clip-ons... I have an 89mm piston, performance cam and other stuff for the engine...all sitting in boxes at the monent. The crank has been rebuilt with all new bearings and a new standard rod. Work continues... Can you post some pics to see what your working with? The final product will have a greater impact if we see what you started with.

It's going to be fantastic to see all your years of SR experience pull together to create what will be something truly extraordinary! Looking forward to hearing more, G Man

Wow is right!!!! Sounds like the mother of all SR builds. Super curious how to pull off wire wheel on rear with disc set up. Are you going with a disc/hub from a more recent dirt bike, or custom, or a Talon there also? Can't wait to see pics and read more updates. Gary Hopwheels

Hi, I have been procrastinating for a while now...building up the DCM and I keep playing around with the road SR continually. That was meant to be a standard E model...oh well. The rear wheel had to have a cush drive...unlike the rest of the SR's I have modified...I have so far decided on a rear hub from a recent Yamaha trail 600...nice and small and light looking. The hub will decide the minimum disc diameter I will have in the end....heh, heh...small bit of humour... The Talon, like the rest of the competition dirt bike hubs, has no cush drive. I am trying to determine a small caliper to use...perhaps a tiny little twin piston ISR...of course too close in to the hub with a twin piston caliper and the spokes will probably get in the way once again. The bike started out as an immaculate H model...shame to permanently change it...but I chose the one with the most K's on it. It continues... SR

Hi, I was in contact with Karl from Cafe Racer today...seems he's back in business again in the small settlement of Wattle Flat NSW...so I will most likely send the head and barrel to him for some serious work. Nice performance port job and a precision re-bore...89mm...his engines seem to have proven themselves and that'll do me. Much more work to go yet and I have yet to finally decide on the rear suspension...White Power; Wilbers; Ohlins...hmmm. The shocks need to be adjustable for length, high and low speed damping etc...I need also to contact Pete Campbell again and discuss the steel swing arm fabrication....make it a bit longer than stock. Might also have the frame checked for straightness and then the frame strengthening and lightening will begin. My ideas for the exhaust design have been changing over the time I've been considering the project...seems like years and years...and I have not yet decided on the style...high, low, middle....short, long...Not too loud, not too quiet...stainless, carbon...aargh! Hi, Took the SR's head and barrel to Karl at Wattle Flat yesterday for some work... Karl has a decent supply of SR engine internals and gaskets. Got a pair of new oil pump rotors and the seals from him while I was there. Better to start from a 'zero' position with these I feel as the originals had done 100,000km or so. He also has the alloy SR cam chain adjuster covers and the late model chromed original SR exhaust rocker oil line and bolts... So far I am doing the following to the engine...in no particular order: - Karls' cam and indexed cam sprocket
- late model rockers (as shown by Sjef in the engine postings)
- late model SR sandwiched base gasket, with the metal (steel?) in the centre
- late model SR exhaust valve
- new original 2J2 inlet valve
- ported inlet and exhaust
- R&D valve springs and Ti retainers
- Barnett clutch plates and stronger springs
- new main bearings and new Carillo rod
- OMC twin oil line to head
- Kei Hin CRS38mm carb
- heavy duty cam chain
- cases and top end to be wet grit blasted to make it look like new again...I'll have to paint the inner cases silver again once they're clean
- new engine screws
- Wiseco 89mm HC piston
- extra engine breather coming out of the cam end cover...several options there
- machined cylindrical (7075) or Lockhart matrix oil cooler...haven't decided which yet
- magnetic oil drain plug
- new valve guides
- etc...
I am probably going to get Wilbers rear shocks as well Had a look at some at Karls on a HL500 dirt bike. Very well made. I also just saw a brand new SR400 on the road just a short while ago. It had been bought from Deus and had an alloy tank and new seat etc. Very nice, another ACT SR for our rides...bring 'em on! SR

Crikey dude. Have you got bottomless pockets or an understanding missus? I've gotta give mine a two hour lecture on the necessities of oil changes before i can even go buy oil! ;D Look forward to seeing the photographic progress of this one!

Hi, Heh, heh...it's only money...only good for what it can get you. I've an understanding wife as well... This bike will cost a little bit as I wanted to make a bike that was better than anything that I'd done before...sort of cafe racer retro bike. Hope it turns out OK... SR
