Hi all, Strictly speaking this is not really a project by the standards at this forum but it has been great fun never the less... Here is a pic of the new bike... I have just finished (for now) refurbing it. I had the shop (Deus) put on the new exhaust... I put on the new Handle bars, Indicators, Tail light and Seat I also repainted the tank and side panels (They will have an Orange stripe, the opposite to the tank... Ran out of paint so maybe tomorrow?). The tank looks red in the pic but it is actually burnt orange, mmmmmmm Hope you all likes! Hope the images worked out not really sure I got it right... Will soon see I guess!

BTW gonna remove the Deus on the side covers just a stop gap till I paint them. Looked so big and white without!

Nice looking bike - I love the paintjob!
Make sure you never wrap the header pipe, or you'll see what happened to my muffler in that section.
Any tips on the paintjob?

Thanks for the words... The seat is a Nitro Heads beauty. Paint job pretty simple really. Masked all the areas, Painted the whole tank "Ford Red Flame" Thought it was gonna be red as the name implies but it is actually a really nice orange. Quite happy about it. Started with really light coats with just 5 minutes between each. Probably has 15 such coats. Once dry masked the "red" and then did exactly the same with the white. Left it to dry and then marvelled at the simplistic beauty of modern day chemicals that come out of a cheap spray can. What did happen to your header pipe? I was considering wrapping it. I Like the look!

Thanks for the low down on the paint job! Do you have any previous painting experience? Looks great!
My muffler melted and fell off. If you wrap it... it'll happen mate - I hope they told you this! Check out my thread in the muffler section - "Spectacular Exhaust Failure". Also, if you get the chance try and paint the exhaust joiner pipe - they decay and pit really, really easily.

Thanks for the heads up on the muffler... I just found your post. Bummer! I also got the SUper Sound from Deus. Oh oh? Well I guess we'll see what happens.
The only painting experience I have with painting is a fantastic hippy flower design on a 74' Kombi. Hehehehe Otherwise no automotive painting experience. I read a bunch of forum painting stuff before I started and basically if you do lots of super light coats you can't really go wrong. The thing is if you overspray and area it is hard to get it off neatly but if you underspray you can always add more.
Ok now I am about to show my extreme ignorance... What is the Exhaust joiner pipe? What should I paint it with? I live right on the beach so I guess it will very likely rust badly.

Mate, if you like the pipe, don't let any of my babble get to you. I did love the sound of the pipe though - nice and sharp without being too offensive.
Others have recommended BBQ paint to me. See how that goes?
And man, if painting a tank is really that easy even I'll have a shot! How did you prep your tank? What brand of paint did you use? And does it look as good in person as it does in the pics?
So many questions!

Simple prep... Light sand with 400 wet and dry. Remember lots and lots of very light coats. Don't risk runs! The brand was holts dupli colour auto spray from local repco for the orange. And just a generic white matte laquer for the white. Yup really was easy! Post painting required no buffing with the orange. Once it is fully hardened I will put a bunch of clearcoat layers over the whole lot. I'll let you know how that go's Good luck. As for me BBQ paint it is!

Champion, thanks mate!
My tank is looking a bit sad since I dropped it a while ago - I might try and think of a colour scheme and see how I go. Post up some more pics when it's all done...

Sweet looking bike! I've got the same seat on mine and that paint job looks wicked! Post more pics as the job continues...
BTW, how are those ace bars without rear-sets?

I am very comfortable in the riding position with the ace bars and no rear sets. That said I have very minimal riding experience so don't have a lot to compare it with. Still works for me. Just finished painting the side covers. Used a different brand of paint. Definitely prefered the holts Dupli stuff. Gonna go over it again with Holts. Still all in all not too bad a job. I'll put more images up tonight if I get the chance. Cheers

Yay another surfer motorcycle nut ! I went to the Maldives last August & stayed at Pasta's & I recommend it for a very relaxing surfing holiday. This year is going to be more intense as I'm heading to the Mentawis for 11 days on a boat in about 27 days YAY ! I'm working on a SR500/sidecar project at the moment to combine surfing & motorcycling(saving fuel too!)I saw your location as central coast , I reside south west WA coast (Yallingup is the closest break 9ks).Your SR looks cool (Sydney Swans colours)My latest SR500 is WC Eagles colours & its a pity there out of it for the season( I may have to go back to black & gold) cheers Dave.
