Wish I was going to Mentawais too! You live in a great spot for surf. I gotta make it over to WA! Off to Green Island in two weeks so really shouldn't complain too much. I like the side car idea. I'm gonna rig up detachable surf rack for the SR. Deus sell them for $800 but I reckon I can get sorted for $150 with a bit of enginuity and a stack of elbow grease. That is next project! I'll post when they are done.

I had a detachable rack on a GPz550 I had in South Africa in the mid 80s . It worked well & I did heaps of Ks with it . I think it wouldn't work as well on a kick only bike as you really need to be able to get at both sides of the bike but I suppose you could start the bike first then clip the board in ?I remember losing my balance in a carpark as I couldn't get my foot out from between the board & engine & down I went! I broke my mirror & dinged my board & it was also hard to get out from the rig as well ! So sidecar it is this time . Are you doing a boat trip or a land based Maldives trip? Cheers Dave.

I'll let you know how the practicality go's with kick starting with board attached. I have now mastered the art of kickstarting (Probably just jinxed myself) and seem to be able to get it going with just one kick and a light one at that! So don't see it being a major problem. Mikey at Deus showed me the side stand down trick for people with short legs. Works really well. Gonna do 7 days on boat and 3 days in resort. I also really really really wanna go to Samoa. It looks amazing and cheap and really really good!

I hope you get it good ! Jails is the best wave(righthander) but there is so many other waves & the water temp is joy ! It can get fairly crowded at times so hit the water at dawn or lunchtime can be epic . You won't be seeing any motorbikes after Singapore thats for sure ,its all boats cheers Dave

How does a surfboard go in the cross wind?
Not much worse because you have a larger side profile, or as I assume, a lot worse?

I have only ridden a pushy with surfboard racks. Can get pretty scary if it is windy... That said extra weight of bike vs pushy should aleviate some of the problem. Also just gonna do local breaks anyway.

Its actually OK , the problem I encountered was stopping & getting my right foot out from between my board & footpeg when the wind caught me apart from that I hardly noticed it(I rode from Capetown to Jefferies Bay which is about 1000ks) I sat on about 120-130kph . As far as riding a pushy to the surf I haven't done that since 1975 over Rotto & its just not going to happen again cheers Dave.

Now I'm definitely jealous! Surfing J Bay! Mmmmmmmmm Perfect looooong ride! Ah well have to be happy with South Avoca for now. Went for first good ride today on the SR... Did the Pacific Highway from Peats Ridge to Berowra. Too much fun I say. Had everyone ask about the bike... Even two girls in a rav 4 who pulled up next to me. Guess they liked the paint job. Hehe

Here are a couple more pics of my latest work... I decided to change the tank decals over to something a bit nerdy... Star Wars people will get these! Anyone know what they are? Also changed the Tacho and Speedo and made up a little instrument panel using LED's and some brushed aluminium. Took about an hour and $12 hard earned dollars. Heheheh. Next week ordering pod filter conversion kit from Vanem. Anyone wanna sell vintage headlight kit? ? I still love Said Beastie!!! So nice to ride :-)

Sadly Maldives got cancelled! Poo!!! Surfed Green Island though and scored those epic Lefts that dreams are made of. Very Nice. Not Sydney Swans logo. Crikey.

Bummer on the Maldives trip ,as I've heard it's been a great season so far. The Mentawis were good but a little more crowded than I'd expected .We got a few though & the water temp is the best. I'm already over the cold water over here at the moment! Where is Green Island? Cheers Dave.
