Thanks Sven:
Yup, you are right! Looked at the old bearing that I removed from the case and it needed the 3mm shim to space out the face of the inner race to be flush with the face of the outer race. The new bearing I replaced it with already has a flush inner and outer race.
Suprised to hear that the shim is required for a newer models? The bearing not needing the shim seems to be stouter. Things all fit up nicely with the new flush bearing and no spacer.
Thanks again for the guidance Sven

Hello all, Well, the lump is pretty much all back together. Polished the cases a bit and fitted the rest of the clutch and stator components. Very happy with how it came out! Thanks for all the help along the way everyone. Here are a few more shots... Clutch side Final Inspection of the Old Man's work ... Looks like I ddn't pass assembly spec on the dual oil line kit installation ... Now its time to put the engine away for a while and get back to work on the chassis. Bill--

Thanks Bill! One weekend when you're available, i'd like to take you up on your offer. I've been piggybacking your posts for hints, as I'm also rebuilding an SR500 albeit alot slower and milder in comparison!
I just sent my top end to Engine Dynamics yesterday for refinishing and valve inspection, and coincidently got my frame/swingarm powdercoated across the street from A&A racing. Ray over at A&A offered to flush out the blast media from the oil reservoir...if I ever plan to match up an R6 front end, i'll be calling that guy, very cool stuff he has over there.
It also looks like a copper gasket between the cylinder and head? Is that from a special gasket kit?

Hey Chris:
The copper gaskets are from ThumperStuff. I used their base and head gasket. He has the head gaskets in stock (40thou), 60 thou and 80 thou.
A&A is truely a magical place. Did you get a look at the bike collection and TZ750 flat tracker?
How did the powder coating come out? Will need to do that soon!
Will PM you to give you directions. Give me a week or two to clean up my shed!!!!
