I have a 1978 SR-500 that has a very nasty scrape down by where the muffler attaches. I have been watching ebay, but have all but given up on that idea as the prices I have seen lately are way out of my range, and from what I have seen for used parts. Are their any suppliers in the states other than Omar's. Or should I just order up some tubes and have a welding party. Thanks JohnB

I went to the dealership today iquiring about engine gaskets. The exhaust system popped up, and the header pipe caught my eye. Quickly I asked if it was available, and he said was discntinued, but the price was still in their system as ~$180. I've seen a ton of the japanese options, but the are very pricey. Some systems are up to $700.
My bike currently has an old aftermarket header, so I think my easiest option is to go to a local custom eshaust shop and just have one bent up for ~$100

Johnb, I am about to start building a custom exhaust system for the 500. If you are interested let me know. I'll be proto-typing the whole system possibly as soon as next week. Should have something available for sale in several weeks. I can't estimate the cost yet but once the design has been finalized and proto-typed, I should be able to quote $. hope this helps, Mitch Mitchell Motor Works Anderson, CA 96007

Will your header pipe hang low enough so that a universal muffler will clear the frame?

Robo: Just for info's sake, I have ordered this header pipe kit from Yamaha. They have been able to back order it out of Japan successfully. It is a new header pipe and studs. Robomod, Yes, the plan is to build a system that will bolt on using the mounts available on a stock frame. With the first system I do, the header pipe will probably route below the frame and come out just aft of the pass. peg on the Right. This will require the removal of the center stand. I am also planning a system that will appear more stock and leave the center stand in place.
Keep in mind too, that we are just in the beginning stages of mock up and proto-type, so things may change a little as we build.
It's good to hear that we can still get originals!
Regards, Mitch

I was surprised they still offered the pipe. Maybe it's an SR400 pipe. Many of the parts on my bike are the 400.
This market should be blowing up here. Too bad Yamaha's not on the ball.

Mitch, It is good to see that their are a few options.I am getting tired of ebay. There is a used super trap system listed now and is still over 2 days away and already up to 197.50, which call me cheep but I think that is way too much for used. These guys must not know the value, or are bidding up their own parts cause i watch used going for as much or more than new. well enough of my ranting, good luck on the pipes. John B.

harley pipes are the same id as prefomance sr pipes,so if you want to weld up your own pipes this is a good source and hd's gasket is nice and thick to take up any slop in your welding.Bob

Hi Guys, We have head pipes, rear mufflers and full performance systems in a shipment that left Japan on the weekend, (to Aus that is). Will be on sale from Mid Novemeber some time... Wont be super cheap but very reasonable. Its hard to find systems as good as the quality exhaust from Japan ..... (sorry no offence but it true!)

hi to all, just taken delivery of a new header from biebo[germany] its slightly different angle than stock but fits perfect and also suits stock muffler.heres the good bit, they are single wall and in polished stainless, not taken it out yet [raining!] it comes complete with clamping plate and welded eye at the bottom,it really is a straight swap with no aggro.if you look inside the stock header you will see its quite restricted due to the double wall,i'm hoping for an improvement in performance as it is more freeflowing than stock.nearly forgot the important bit;price 129 euros plus 18 euros for shipment to u.k regards, andy

I know at this point I'm starting to sound like a spokesman, but you can't go wrong with the Jemco set up. It is only $220 for the full set up(shipped) and as long as you don't want it prefinished it's a log better option than used ebay systems. I'm pretty sure they make a set up that lets you keep the center stand and uses stock mounts if you aren't into the upturned look.
