OK, I'm cleaning up the thumper. I'm installing a new o ring on the oil line and a new shifter seal and the seal on the sprocket shaft. the sprocket and the chain blah blah blah.... i decided to hose the front sprocket area down with brake cleaner to start working with a clean area. i noticed the chain wasn't rusted nor was it the normal blackish dark metal finish. it was silver. now immediately i knew it wasn't aluminum. so i took a closer look. the chain was stamped with 530 OR. the front sprocket and rear sprocket seem to be looking good. i was only changing them because that's what your suppose to do when you change the chain. am i correct in thinking a stainless steel O ring chain is what I'm running? the front sprocket is rusty looking. the back one is ok. there's not a heck of a lot of wear. i don't think i should change them now. clean the chain oil it back up and... go for a ride.

I doubt your chain is stainless steel although anything is possible.. Many premium chains have plated side plates, such as the gold colored Regina chains. The 530 OR is referring to the size and type of chain. I would be interested to hear if other board members have seen any SS chains for motorcycles. I would think SS chain would be frightfully expensive and hard to manufacture with little benefit over o-ring and x-ring chains. Maybe for salthingyer applications? Interesting post. Chain and sprockets should be changed together but o-ring chains prolong chain and sprocket life remarkably . If everything looks good you probably don't have to change them. Just my 2 cents. Raining here in NC, I hope the rest of you get to ride today. Cheers

Why would the word salt-water without the hyphen get a thingy put in it?

I mean the middle bit of salt-water without an hyphen. It's sort of swear word in UK....don't know if it has the same impact in the US

Yeah I see it now, same impact here. Still strange because there must be quite a few innocent words with the same problem. Thanks Ken.

... a few innocent words... Chew, it is only a few words that this occurs. I was getting busted over the "fuelpetc o c k" one a while back. Although, that might have been on my other forum... Anyhow, pretty good company here on this forum, I could turn off the censored word list I guess. I have it on at the moment because I have the registrations wide open not needing my authorization. Sometimes I find it kinda fun trying to work around it! ;D G Man

At least we can say Twit. I had a chain from Mikes XS that had nickel plated side plates. Only the outer plates were silver, the inner were normal color. miker

It could just be a DID S-Bright chain, but if its not worn just use it. If matches ok with the sprockets just ride it till it dies. Does any one use a stretch omiter?? gauge on there chains??? Measures the distance of the links.

Hi, I have seen stainless chains, years ago. My brother had one on a Darmah that he'd bought. From recollection they were for industrial use...not for bikes. I think that they were low speed type chains as well... SR
