No it was offered to me for $5,000...but it was totally knackered...frame and swingarm damaged...plus all of the cosmetic damage...might have made a nice track bike with a bit of money...but I decided against it anyway...she's in the wreckers now. SR

Stew You SP1 is a ringer for a mate of mines ,same mufflers too ,sounded oh so sweet .He just spent 2 years recovering & recouperating & rebuilding his after some fool ran up his date poor bugger(he's actually lucky to live)he still cant work as his back is kaput . The bike is nearly a goer again after many painful hours & lots of Ebaze but I recon he'll sell it as the memories will haunt him! Back to the muffler subject definately the first P/P pipe & muffler on the first example with that little kick up on it looks cool ! I've done one with a harley muffler & it does look good cheers Dave.

Well, undid all the pinch bolts on one fork and it fell out. Then realised the easiest way to get the top cap off the forks is when it's still held in place.
Got one of the springs out and it wasn't sitting plunked in oil how i imagined. Ah well. I'm going to go with 15 weight and pop the new ikon springs in and see how we go. What really gives me the s***s, however, is the SR400 forks don't have a tap at the bottom for draining.* So the whole thing has to come out, get tipped arse over bollocks and filled.
Which is my long way of asking....
How much fork oil do you put in?**
Once this is done, i sort out the wheel spacers for the back, she's done!
Except for an idea i have for the seat. And tank. Oh, and i want to tidy up the headlight assembly. And a flatslide carby would be cool. And... oh.. d**n...
[Edit: *I was wrong... inside the forks, at the bottom, there is a large recessed hex bolt in there that you undo and you can drain the forks that way... So i didn't have to undo all the bloody pinch bolts to drain it! You live and learn. **Looks like 200ml came out, so 200ml will go back in!]

We've all been there Marlon, doing it the hard way, get it done, feel good about yourself then notice the kick-in-the guts trick that would have saved you a world of trouble......(well I certainly have)
With our fine mechanical skills we could get a get a job at Deus...Resume: my mufflers stay on

Well! Ladies and Gentlemen... the SR lives and breathes again! After a few months off the road, getting a car, a new job and all the other crap that goes on with life it's taken me ages to get her finished... but she's all done now. So, in the end, here is what I did, front to back. Fork Brace from Vanem Steering Damper from Vanem 15w front oil with springs from Ikon New muffler, a Peyton Place SP-001 which required a brief rejetting Ikon rear shocks, 330mm high And last, but by no means least... Aluminium Swingarm courtesy of Trouthunter from the forums And i tell you what... does she handle! I FINALLY understand what all the SR owners go on about when they describe a worked SR's suspension as a "Magic Carpet ride". It really is. The whole thing feels so stable, it brakes beautifully and there is virtually no dive in the front end. Everybody was right about the fork brace too, it really does bring the whole front unit together and make it act more... "together"? Anyway, many thanks to all those whove posted on this thread, and especially to Adrian at Vanem, Ikon Suspension and in particular, Trouthunter's swingarm. If you have any doubt in your mind in getting one... don't. It bolts straight on and really does look amazing. So... What next? The front brake still isn't as response as what I hoped it'd be. Some braided lines and sintered pads are in the works, without doubt. And if at all possible, I really, really need to do something about the clutch pull. It's monstrous. Maybe i've gotten soft in the past three months, but it was really starting to hurt like hell after a few hours riding. I spoke with the patron saint of aluminium the other day, Bernie Willet, and I'm thinking of getting a new seat pan and tank made up at some stage, more than likely after tax time. I've also got some ideas for a fairing... The idea would then be to fit a tidy little electronic speedo. I've also got an old ducati fairing at home with exactly the right headlight diameter for the stock headlight. Hmmm. In any case, with no front fender, no rear fender the whole bike is looking a bit top heavy, and I do need to do something about the instrument cluster. One saga ends... another begins...

You could try adding some 'cartridge emulators' to the front forks. I'm guessing you can buy these from Mike's XS, if you're in Europe the XS650 shop in Germany.
These allow the forks to react more progressively to bumps in the road.
If you find some sintered pads for the standard calipers let me know! EBC do a nice replacement disc which improves the brake and a 11mm master cylinder gives it a progressive feeling.

Hi Marlon, Well done...hope you did the lower allen bolts up nice and tight...unless there is some major difference between the bikes, they are the ones that hold the fork dampers and hence the chrome legs into the sliders...not a good idea to undo those all the way on the bike with the spring tension against the caps either...small things but interesting to know. Good that they undid easily as well...they can sometimes tend to be difficult to undo and rotate with the damper rod requiring a method of holding the damper rod still from the inside. SR

Hey Stew, everything is done up nice and tight, believe me! One thing I'm slightly scared of is the whole front end of the bike falling off. I haven't had the chance to hit some poorly-surfaced backroads, the woe of my bike before, but just through the local bit of slow twisties, Yarra bend road and Yarra Blvde it felt amazing.
Chase, I'd post some pictures, but you probably wouldn't want to see it mate. it's looking a little... functional at the moment.
TC, PM me your email address, I have some pics for you.

Well done mate You should get a job with the place you bought your bike from - you've done more modifications, and can probably make a pipe stay in its place! Seriously, good effort - can i reccomend some theft protection maybe

You probably could - but i work for QBE Motorcycle Insurance now!
If Adrian from Vanem ever opens a shopfront, I'll be there. I couldn't really work for the other mob, but hey, that's just me! Alls i need to do now is fix this awful bloody clutch pull to make her rideable, and then I'm all set.
However, I need to close the door on the mods with this bike... and start on another. (Maybe a CX500, I don't know yet. Maybe back to working on the rifles.)
Thanks for the props though mate! When are you going to post up some pics of your Scrambler?
