Haha, we're all gluttons for punishment really!
I'm moving to Melbourne next week, and I'll start to do it when i organise a second mode of transport. Can't risk having the front end of the bike off for more than the space of a weekend. Mind you, with all the stuff in front of me, springs, oil, front stand for the bike and the rear shocks, it doesn't sound like more than a weekend's work.
Or is that me being stupidly ambitious again?

Hi guys, no one has mentioned the value of a good fork brace. On a road race setup with sticky tyres , improved suspension and greatly increased braking, you have to make the forks work as a unit, not independantly. Go out to your bike and lock the front wheel between your knees, grab the bar ends as you face the rear of the bike and move the bars back and forth in a steering motion. Youll be surprised at the amount of twist there is from the axle through to the bar ends. Tie it all together with a fork brace, one pogo stick is easier to control than two. Cheers Franky b.

Couldn't agree more Frankyb. Marlon, I know Curly has a Tarozzi fork brace he is looking to sell. It's still advisable to do the springs and oil mods first as a fork brace alone will not help your soggy forks.

Yep poor old SR forks are a bit on the spindly side. Allways on the look out for an alternative at a decent price though.Hmmm nice set of upside downs with big brakes oopps there goes the budget....

Marlon, Rick is right I'm still looking for a good home for my fork brace. I have to agree on how much a fork improve the XT front end. So I'd assume it would have the same affect on an SR. (put it on after I'd done the suspension) Curly

Hey Curly, I'll be sending you through the measurements on the SR today.
Also, while I'm here - does anybody have a good front stand they'd recommend? I think Rick was telling me at the Kangaroo valley meet that you just pop out the bung and use a front stand. After going to the shop I've seen thousands of the bastards, but cannae imagine which one would be best. (Truth be told, It's hard to imagine the whole setup).
Cheers fellas!

My SR500 forks are at RaceTech's shop in California for evaluation. They are to rebuild the forks with their emulators and respringing for my weight (200Lbs). They are bringing their development expertise to the AHRMA racers who are racing SR500's, SRX-6's, etc.in time for the '08 season. Let you know how they work out. I'm sending the rear shock to EMS to match up to the YSS RG 302 TRCL rear shock. I will probably go for the larger shafted 366 series rear shocks for the SRX-6 bike.

Hey Fellas!
I've got all the stuff here and it's starting to come together.
I've now got a steering damper and fork brace on the bike, and within the next week i'm getting some new tyres, and the new rear shocks, alloy swingarm and front springs will be going in.
I've got 330mm Ikon rear shocks and and hoping to even things up at the front. What weight oil do you think i should use? I've got some 15w here but i've heard people say more and less. The less chopping and changing, the better! The SR400 doesn't have the drain plug at the bottom of each fork, so i'm going to have to pull both of the suckers off each time i want to stuff around with them.

Good to hear! I wish I had more time on my hands at the moment - I would have offered a hand, especially as I think my suspension needs an overhaul, as my battered kneck keeps reminding me!

That's alright mate! If you ever do feel the need to give me hand, just say so!
Speaking of which, Tuesday the 29th of this month - the SR500 club is meeting at the limerick arms hotel. Pencil it in your diary mate!

Man i love this whole playing mechanic crap!
Today the shocks, swingarm and rear wheel came off. All without a hitch. I went to put the new alluminium swingarm in and... bugger, it doesn't fit with the existing muffler! The supertrapp copy i have on it has this stupidly cumbersome arrangement that hooks it up with the pillion footrest mount.
Anyway, perfect excuse to put on another muffler... what to pick, what to pick... at the moment i'm thinking of either getting a peyton place one from Vanem, a Ducati Conti replica and getting a mount made locally (As per StewRoss' arrangement) or getting one built to Carl's specs locally. We'll see. I'm hankering to take it for a ride.
Anyway, because my muffler kept falling off i loctight'd it all up last time i put it on. Now it bloody won't budge. I gave it a solid spraying with some degreaser earlier and i'll go back and hit it up with some penetrine if that doesn't work.
Anyway, everything's looking brilliant. I took the rear tyre to Intyre motorcycles who were bloody fantastic, and met a bloke recovering with two broken arms who's looking for an SR. (Watch out when dirtbike riding, kiddos) Everything looks like it'll line up. Once i get this muffler off, i should be able to finish the whole rear end pretty quickly... and then to tackle the front. (I'm thinking it'll be a bit tougher than the rear)
Christ this stuff is fun.
Anyway, rant over - what do you all think? 15w oil on the front or is that too much/too little?

For the exhaust - I like the conti idea, but it is noisy, may attract some unwanted attention ie Victorian Police
Stew lives in our nations capital where politicians can legally grow marijuana...so his noisy pipe seems to get by

Haha, that's what I'm thinking.
I like my mufflers loud, but i'm already going deaf and have a bad case of tennitis from rifle shooting. I don't want to aggravate things with the police when I have an application in the mail. Then again they could defect me on pretty much anything as is.
If I'm stuck without a muffler on the bike I might go the easy way out and get a peyton place muffler. Vanem are easy as hell to deal with and I hear the peyton place stuff is pretty top notch. Then again, If i rig up a muffler that's alright for a short ride I wouldn't mind going with Carl's arrangement - he knows his stuff...

Hey marlon.
Sounds like the project is coming along nicely! I'd be interested in any feedback on the Peyton Place mufflers as well...
and let's see some pics!
