Dave, I got a 42 for a 530 earlier this year through Clipstone Yamaha in Ringwood, Melbourne. Can't remember the name of the guy who helped me, he was pretty knowledgeable. Strangely, I got it because I couldn't get a 530 44tooth anywhere! I put a cheap eBay chain on it, and have paid for my false economy - now have to replace everything again with maybe only three or four thousand kms, the bike feels terrible. Was gonna go 17/44 because 17/42's a big leap, but how do you find 17/42? My SRs just a country bike now so traffic light acceleration doesn't matter so much and I'd like to drop the hwy revs; what rpm could you get down to at 100km/hr with 17/42? Any side effects?
Matt

Matt, with the 17/42 combo you will be pulling about 3900rpm. down side less acceleration.

Thanks for that Matt ,you've reminded me to try all the other yam dealers up in Perth too! The 17/42 hasn't been fully tested yet as I'm still in the process of trying to register it . All I know is it went better with a thru exhaust & I couldn't seem to get much more speed out of it than say 130kph & I seem to recall about 4500rpm .The donk is stock & would go much better if I gave it a birthday(next project maybe)wire wheels is the project for now! Cheers Dave.

Hi Dave
admittedly I was after a 520 conversion using XT sprockets but I sent an inquiry to Chaingang this morning and received a reply by lunchtime saying that they had the 17 and 40 tooth sprockets, price front Sprocket is $45 and rear $139. contact #1800 806 857 for orders.
Cheers Rich

price front Sprocket is $45 and rear $139. Quality parts at Peter Stevens are $17 for the front and about $45 for the rear! That place claims to produce a far superior product - I guess they'd want to at that price! What are you doing about the 'spacer' issue?

Hi Matt
There is a large variation in the quality of sprockets, not that I have tried Chaingang before but have heard very good things about them. I will probably make up a spacer on the lathe at work.

I just had a reply from supersprox who I also emailed and they don't list xt/sr sprockets any more but what is interesting is that they tell me that yz400f are the same, sizes are not good though. Smallest rear is 44 and largest front is 15.
Cheers

That's fairly pricey for a rear sprocket hey?& I want a 42 not a 40 as that may be a little over what I'm trying to achieve ! Matt who is Peter Stevens? He sounds like the man! Cheers Dave.

I have had so many crap sprockets over the years by buying cheap that I don't mind spending the money to try out some decent ones, if they don't turn out as good as they are supposed to be then I will have learned a lesson. I am pretty sure that I am not the only person on this forum who has been frustrated and unable to properly adjust a chain because the cheap stamped out sprocket has the holes off centre, teeth not quite straight etc. I believe in quality not quantity.
Cheers Rich

Dave, Have a look at this web site, shop.wemoto.com/index.dyn?oid=2147901 scroll down to the sprocket section, under "Sprocket rear-steel" they list a 42 tooth, I know the exchange rate is not the best, but. Steve.

Point taken Rich , but I must have been lucky with sprockets over the years(they all seem to have been done by professionals or something)as they have all been true & have all looked the real deal & have all been steel & around $40 .I have experienced a few problems with alloy wearing out after 5000ks though. Hank from Hertmotorcycles says he can make me up an alloy one ? What do you think ? Cheers Dave.
