???Hi guys I have in my possession a VM38 round slide that I would like to put on my sr500 1978 "E" bike so here's some questions ..
Do I have to change the rubber inlet from carby to head to a larger size or use the standard one ? Do I have to enlarge inlet port in head to suit larger carby? Thanks for any help TC

It should fit the stock intake boot. But you will need to get a different air filter since the stock boot won't fit it. Shouldn't need to enlarge the intake port, either.

Is your SR engine modified or stock?
General opinion is that a 38mm is too large for a stock engine. A 36mm will give you basically the same top end improvements with out the bottom end and off idle responce problems that you can get when you fit a 38mm to a stock engine.

Thanks colinjay my engine has a wisco ? piston and is 10.5 comp ratio it has the porsche valve adjuster mod done minton mods to carby and is a pig to start hot or cold , I was given the VM round slide to fit for free but it has two stroke jets etc. so I have been talking to Tom Hatrick from Mikunioz in queensland and he has advised jets needles etc. I just want to get her started a whole lot easier and this was recomended over the standard carby TC

tc- in general the SR500's will actually start a tiny bit easier with the stock 34 Mikuni(78,79) or the stock 32 Mikuni(80,81). However this assumes the stock carb has been soaked and all the tiny passageways are clean. You usually don't have to track down the 3 expensive diaphragms(one accel pump, one anti backfire, and the last might be-I forget- maybe it prevents the accel pump from squirting out fuel when you twist the grip with the motor not running??) The 36,38 Mikuni roundslides are generally easier to keep patent,so they are usually more likely to start well once they get older. I probably have WBros 38 roundslide jetting specs somewhere if you need them.

tc- naturally enough after 30 minutes of looking I found all sorts of jetting-everything but the VM 38 roundslide. Eventually I'll find it and post it. Here are White Bros specs for their VM 36 MJ- 220-240 PJ 30-35 CA-3.0 6DH3-2 NEEDLE IN SECOND SLOT NEEDLE JET P-8 17-19 MM FLOAT 1 3/4 TURNS OUT PILOT SCREW ADJ
For the 36 FLATSLIDE PUMPER MIKUNI-from VD Classics MJ-135 PJ 25 Needle jet P-6 #568 NEEDLE 9DZH5 50 AIRJET .8
I'll eventually find the VM 38 SPECS Charlie

tc just went through this on my bike i have a 36mm and there is actually a different manifold needed to correctly install the carb, and lengthen the runner to improve performance. downside is no one (at least in the states) sells one so i had to fabricate my own intake. but if your stock rubber works and is holding the carb i see no problem with using it.

The 36/38mm Mic's go straight into the standard manifold because they're made to suit a Mikuni carb. My SR riding compatriot Lee from down the coast, did me a favour the other day and used his Dremel tool to take out the 'head side' ID on a standard manifold I had to 38. That was done to suit the 38mm Mikuni VM I am now fitting. Thanks mate. Neat job and it helps with through flow...as does blending in the head to suit the larger carb at the manifold to head intersection. Out of interest for those who don't know, the Mikuni and Kei Hin manifolds differ internally as to the position of the rib that holds the carb in position...so best not to try to make a standard Kei Hin carb fit into a Mic manifold...you can force it in and clamp it up, but best to get the correct manifold to start with. Interestingly the Japanese make a Kei Hin CRS 38mm carby kit for the SR and various size FCR kits as well. Beside having SR compatible jetting out of the box, the screw-in manifold adaptors are made with a Mikuni type spigot so they can go straight into a standard SR manifold...nice touch... SR
