Hi, I would like to change tanks on my 81 SR500 to a non vacuum actuated tank and petcock and use my stock carb. My question is do I cut & just plug the the vacuum hose coming out of the carb, say with a bolt and some safety wire maybe some gasket sealer? Will things work as usual? I've never had a vacuum set up before so it's all new to me. Thank You

You could just plug the hose but would look a lot neater to take off the hose and put a plastic or rubber cap over the vacuum port.

... but this is the correct procedure, yes? Man Steve I'm just going to start emailing you directly, Thanks for all you help. Here's an idea. It's my opinion that the internet should be free and all info available to anyone seeking it. So, why not keep all communications concerning the bikes on the forum. People with the same or similar problems searching for help may find your questions and answers using search engines and be able to benefit from your leg work. That's how a lot of people have arrived here. There sure seems to be a lot of PM's and private email going on behind the scenes lately. Just my two cents... Carry on, G Man

Well put Gman, I will keep it in the forum as I am grateful for all the info I can get and hopefully give. However it was an small attempt at humor as Steve5000 alone has been very helpful with my latest project so reading between the line may be just as important.....

Yeah, don't email me about it. Even though I've owned the SR500 since 1991 I certainly don't know everything about it, mostly just what's in the Clymer manual that I've read cover to cover dozens of times. It doesn't cover everything though so I'm thinking about also buying a Haynes manual.

Look in the Mikes XS catalog, they have a nice vacuum plug that will show you what they're like... surely you could find something local rather than ordering tho. Might have to ask at the desk at NAPA or somewhere like that.

Any auto parts store has the rubber caps for covering the vacuum port.

Solo2Racer do you know if that conversion still provides you with a reserve setting?

Yes it does. With the lever pointing back it is in the OFF position, down is ON and, forward is RES. Your stock petcock will work like a normal non-vacuum petcock.

Hi, I bought a non-vacuum petcock from Mikes XS, part #20-0019. Also the sealing washers part #20-0018. Works great!
