Hello from country NSW, Call me fuzzball. I have been staying at my uncles farm for the last week or so learning to ride bikes. While putting the old ag100 back in the shed I saw something under all the rubbish and junk. 10 minutes later I pull out my Great Uncle Bill's(R.I.P. ) rather beaten up old SR500. Uncle said I can have it since he recons it will take ages+$$$$ to get it running. Found this forum searching for info on the bike. Looks like a great little communioty, so figured I might as well jion. Over the next few days I'm going to see if the old bird is salvagable, and I dare say I will need some help with that. Photos and more tomorrow, it's getting close to 11 and I'm sleepy. C'ya.

Thanks for the welcome guys, and now a warning; The following images may be disperbing to some viewers. I'm planning to compleatly stip her down and do a compleate rebuild, the poor old bird badly needs it . Here is a list I made of what needs to be done at first glance. Will do, if she is running by then. This is going to be fun Hopefully.

Gidday from WA ! Looks like you've got a project & a half there mate ! An honest opinion though ,look for a more complete one & salvage what you can off that one . Reason I say this is you are about to go on the rollercoaster of spending a lot of coin! I've done one up that looked like that ,I spent 4grand on it plus another $700 bike with an engine that went & I still need a front master & I've still got to rego it ! I love it & it was worth the money & the time but I'm a SR500 fruitloop (dont for get the swingarm will be seized solid & is a major to fix)cheers from Dave the bubbleburster.

heck, it was free right? Wash the dirty bastard off with a hose, change the oil, clean the carb and see if it works! (dunno how you're gonna get fuel in the thing with no key tho ) I don't know how available parts are down there, but I wouldn't think it would take too-too much....unless you're lookin for a shiney machine?

I know (and am starting to realize:lol:) that this will be a big, long and costly project. I said complete rebuild, and I'm not just talking about the engine . Guessing repair costs to be around 3 - 5k over a few years (my father, a mechanic who has worked on everything from lawn mowers to small aircraft, agrees). The bike hasn't been sitting in one spot for the last 10 or so years, it's been moved around a bit and kicked over occasionally, hence the swing arm moves freely and the engine hasn't completely seized (though I will probably have to pull the swing arm of to paint the frame anyway). Yep. Given it one bath already, needs a few more though. Looks like oil has leaked or been spilled from the tank onto the cylinder head, and the usual cr*p has built up around everything (new gaskets?). The engine side casings are heavily corroded, the cylinder, has surface rust on the outside, but the engine block looks awesome. Casings and cylinder will get bead blasted or a similar treatment (unless I can pick up replacements cheaper). Needs a new air filter before it can be started (old one is falling apart and I don't want the motor to inhale any wasp/hornet nests I missed ). Pulling the carby of and giving it a clean will be the first things I do after cleaning everything. Maybe then I can work out how the bloody thing works, then just stick a funnel in the end of a fuel line to give her petrol. How does one go about getting a new (tank) key when they don't have any of the bikes papers? Uncle and father know (or know of at least) a Carl in the next city over from where I live. I'm hopeing I can get into contact with him to source a few parts. I saw mention of a Carl on these forums somewhere, I'm wondering if they're the same person. None of these plans are set yet, and I'm starting to have doubts. Then I walk out and have a look at the old bird.

Well at least your being realistic ! I'm surprised that the ignition key doesn't fit the tank lock try CRC & give it a wriggle as 1 key usually fits all . I use an old generator tank as my test tank for tuning & getting my bikes running. I hang it up over head height with a long tube so its out of the way(I like having the tap so I can turn it off in emergency) & I also fit a filter to the carb to prevent any more bits getting in . But before I do any of this I check for spark(should get without a battery)& squirt oil down the barrel whilst you turn it over(this could be the major reason she ended in the shed -CDI,stator/fault. The different carbs a bit of a worry too(does it have a pumper on it?)If you get it ready to go drain all the oil you can use cheap coles or woolies oil to get it running & leave it in till you've done a reasonable ride then drain it & give it a new filter as well as motul or some other motorcycle oil. That way good dollars aren't getting tossed as the donk may need major attention! Good luck with it & welcome aboard it's always good to see another SR getting restored to its former glory ! I scored one like yours a couple of months back through my brother & I pulled out the engine fully cleaned & polished it ,put it in my new project & got it going in about 10 minutes .Had it idling in 15 so you never know !Cheers Dave.

Most folks who are smart enough (and tasteful enough) to know what an SR is are going to think like Markus — what the hell, it was free. Clean it up, try to get it running and take it from there. If you decide it's too much for you, you can bet there are people out there who will pay you something for it and take a shot at fixing it up themselves.
(Although having just dumped $1,000 into an SR in "perfect" condition, I certainly value davedunsboro's words of wisdom.)
And don't misplace any parts, no matter how bad they look. I just got back from the Yamaha dealer with a machined washer (must have fallen off the cylinder on the way to the machine shop) a lock washer (for the drive sprocket) and the rubbers spacers for between the cooling fins. One washer, one lock washer, and some rubber spacers — $25 plus tax.
We have a great motorcycle junkyard here, but it's even more expensive than the dealer. The owner knows you won't come to him unless you couldn't find the parts anywhere else, and one of the few joys in his dismal life is watching the faces of new bike owners when he quotes a price.
By the way, could that be a joey catcher bolted to the frame just in front of the engine? I've never seen those on SRs from other places.

Looks like the '75 XL250 I pulled out of a barn last year. Same color scheme, too! Good luck with the rebuild.

Thats it! Your hooked ! Now off to see the bank manager or find that spare bike or both . Just do it! The biggest problem with the spare bike is that you end up wanting to restore that one too & so on. Did you ride it with no seat(I would have with a piece of foam under me butt) Well done anyway cheers Dave.

Fuzzball, your bike will probably look great after some cleaning and polishing. It could be worse, I have one I bought from a guy in Tucson who said it had been sitting in his back yard for 20 years while he was in the military. His back yard must have been in the Atlantic Ocean while he was in the military and he must have moved here later because every part on the bike is badly rusted and corroded like it was sprayed with salt water the entire time. Things usually won't deteriorate that badly in Arizona but every part on this bike is rusted up solid! I'm going to use it for a parts bike if I can ever get any parts off it!
