been a quiet observer for almost a year now.. watching other peoples projects grow and thought it was about time a sent through a few photos of my 1978 SR500. A bit of history first... i purchased the bike about two years ago. I found this picture online and am pretty sure that this must have been the same bike well before it came into my hands However, this is a shot of the bike as i purchased it. This bike seems to have had quite a history and i wouldnt be surprised if it is recognised by a few Australian members.

i guess this is when i had to decide as to what i was going to do with the rebuild. Should i restore it back to its former glory or.. should i build the type of machine i've always wanted. it was a hard decision, as the bike was so beautiul and it seemed like a shame to turn my back on all the hard work that had gone on before me. But a decision had to be made and i fugured that as now was the perfect time to rebuild the bike from scratch, i may as well build it the way i want it. And so it began... Bike stripped down to bare bones frame chopped and welded

Jesus mate, looking great!
I almost bought that bike two or so years ago when it popped up in the MT magazine. Looked like a corker. I remember a few people saying they'd seen it around a few times before. Sorry to hear about your accident. Shit happens though eh?
Love the bike as is, to be honest. I'm a big fan of that tank, but i'm not sure if I could deal with it's range. That's gotta be what... 5-7 litres?
Anyway, it looks stunning. Love the looks of it. Must be freakin' loud.

Yeh not the biggest tank.. i think its just on 6 or so liters. I've really made this bike as an around the city runner, so not too concerned about how many miles i'll get out of it. besides.. i dont think those tyres are for high speeds and fast corners either. Bike is/was very loud.. set off car alarms as it went past. So i've just picked up a very nice new exhaust from vanem that has just been put on. Glad you like it!

Great thread - that's a job to be proud of!
Don't know if it's a rude question, but did the insurance charge you much to buy the bike back? I'd want that option if my baby went down - mine's insured for $3800 but it wouldn't take much to write it off given the price a workshop would charge to repair things.

as far as i know, insurance companies dont provide a buy back 'option' on a write off. it seems to be taken on a case by case basis. For me personally i was told that they would consider a buy back price of 1/3 of its insured value, but this ratio changes relative to bikes age, model etc.. it also depends on if the bike is a fixable write off or a complete write off. Put it this way.. if you claim for insurance on a write off, there is a very real chance that you may not get your bike back. You really need to do the math and work out if it is worth making the claim. Say you have a $3600 bike.. 1/3rd of that is $1200 to buy back, add to that minimum of about a $400 excess. now your up to $1600, plus the bike is a write off, so you have to get a blue slip and re-register / insure the bike before it can go back on the road.. your close to $2500 by now which leaves you about $1100 in the bank.. Again, thats banking on the fact that you can buy the bike back! Now if the repair bill on the bike is only going to cost you $2500 or less and you can do the work yourself, its just not worth making a claim.. add to that higher premiums next time you insure your bike and loss of already existing rego on bike.. its just not worth it. It was a long drawn out process and not something i wish to do again in a hurry. Worst case senario is the bike goes straight to auction and goes home to the highest bidder!

Looks great without a front fender and those tyres. I was going to ask how you go living with the drag pipe, but seeing as you bought a new one I guess that answers that question. Did you have any baffles in it?
That bike popped up just after I bought my SR. Are you in Tassy?
