Check and re-check. The coil tests good. The battery is new. I put a CDI unit from a running bike on it. The 20 amp fuse is intact and the fuse holder tests OK. The kill switch is "ON" and when I went inside the headlight I pulled it's connector. The ignition switch works the lights and makes a faint sound in the area of the CDI unit (possibly the turn signal relay). I take that to mean that it is delivering power.
My only options are a broken/grounded wire or faulty plug unit, and lastly a bad stator relay thing. And alternative explanations of help would be greatly appriciated.

Hallo Digiroc, are you sure the killswitch is oke, measured? some sr have a (kill)switch on the stand/jiffy if the wire makes contact with earth/frame/minus it is a no go did you check the voltages on the cdi connector? is the plugcap oke? with coil you mean ignition coil or the coils in the stator?
regards sjef

THANK YOU ALL ! I have to use a tent as a workshop, but I've got the wiring stripped of the 15 feet of electrical tape that was wrapped around it and liberally sprayed the gunk out of all the connectors. I bought a multi-meter and have to learn to use it to find out what's wrong. All your posts were very helpful, especially the clear diagram of the area I need to check with the values on page two of this thread.

hallo Ray, ... on a 78 generator red brown gives 5,1ohm, brown black 310 ohm, black red/white 15 ohm(highspeedpickup), black green/white 84 ohm(lowspeedpickup)... OK, I get the proper resistance for the low and high speed pickups but I can't seem to get a reading from the generator charging side. Would that stop the bike from starting with a fresh battery? I guess that I'll have to look into getting an SR stator in either case. I'll post in the "wanted / for sale" section of this forum. Any help here would be appreciated guys.

I scored a complete SR500 with a "blown" engine and a TT/TX engine in it. The guy never got it running, with the dirt bike engine no wonder, and I got it for a song and a 1200+ mile drive.
The stator from the "blown" engine worked and I got my bike running again!
Back on topic: Now I have three CDI units and they all tested good. Once the stator was working I hooked them all up and they all produced a spark.
