Hallo Gary Do not know the current price, i have bought the kit through evamotors 2 years ago but they are now in the dieselmotorcycle bussiness and stopped selling parts for the sr. I know www.vanem.com.au has a few of them in stock. regards sjef

I am also looking to possibly procure one of the Asuotani kits. Any left? I am building a custom cafe racer from scratch (my own frame, every thing else too!) and using an xt500 engine. I am not a big points fan so im hoping to convert this over to cdi... also planning quite a few engine mods so a tunable ignition would be prime. Does anyone know what else i will need, in addition to this kit, to get the ignition on my xt motor up and running? Thanks guys. Loving this site. F. A. Spencer King

Hey fask! Welcome aboard. That sounds like a really cool project... and should fit right in here! Just a thought, but would it be easier to find the entire bottom end from an SR500 and use that, to get the stator/magneto and eliminate the points? Again just a thought. They come up from time to time on eBay for pretty reasonable. I actually have a couple I need to get rid of myself come to think of it . Looking forward to reading updates and hopefully seeing some pics. Gary Hopwheels

Greetings sjef, I went to the Asuotani web site and looked at their SR500 ignition. It looks very interesting. How do I buy one? What do they cost? Thanks, Ray

Hallo Ray, Do not know wether asuotani sells directly to endusers. you better send them an email , english is no problem. if they do not sell try vanem , they will help you. beware there are 3 different types for the sr500/400, depending of year of make. www.vanem.com.aubest regards sjef

Hi sjef, Thanks for the reply. I sent emails to both asuotani and vanem.
You say that there are 3 different types for the sr500/400. I have a 1978 sr500, will they need more data to sell me the right one. I am going to check tomorrow to see if my bike has points.
I have the factory manual and it is poor. It has virtually NOTHING on how to trouble shoot the ignition. Is there a site with data on the sr500 black box? My Honda manual for the CX500 has all kinds of data to check the CDI. Unfortunately they are usually bad and I do not think anyone makes an after market CDI for the CX500.
Ray

Thanks Stew, You are right. I went out and checked and there is no points cover so I assume no points.
How is the CDI triggered? How can I trouble shoot the ignition? Is there a web page with some electrical data? it looks like the Asuotani replaces everything except the trigger.
Regards, Ray

hallo Ray, you can check the wiring from the generator under the lefthand enginecover in front of the sprocket. on a 78 generator red brown gives 5,1ohm, brown black 310 ohm, black red/white 15 ohm(highspeedpickup), black green/white 84 ohm(lowspeedpickup)
buy yourself a workshopmanual it will give you all the details of the ignition near the generator there are 2 pickup coils which trigger the cdi.
for asuotani the type 2j2 or 2j4 SR500 and the year of make is enough.
hope this will help you
best regards
sjef

Hi sjef, I very much appreciate your help. I have the "Genuine" Yamaha service manual but am not thrilled with it. I am going to check out the Hayes manual, perhaps it is a little better. I am heading to Florida for a week but hopefully by the time I get back I will have heard from asuotani. My plan is to check the the resistance values that you gave me and also check the coil. If nothing jumps out as being a problem I will try to buy an asuotani or the after market CDI sold on ebay from New Zeland for $150.
Moving right along, weak spark ray

Bumping this old thread to find out how to get one of these CDI units. My SR died without a spark and can't seem to get one out of it. Could it be the CDI ?

Sorry if you've already checked these details...but just out of interest...the kill switch is on??? Don't laugh, it has occurred before...it can be bumped and people don't look at it if you don't always use it... Maybe check that the wiring is all connected in the headlight as well... If all that is OK...then move on to the more painful items... SR
