Ordered new carb from Sudco, and........no reply.....strange Found one ebay, new vm34, jetted for the sr, with extra main jets in steps both upward and downwards. Good, fast service. Us firm Savage Performance. Should I keep the airbox or should I ditch it....? home.onlin.no/~cfolkeChrister

Hi Christer, I guess it depends on what you want yourself...if it is going to be an eveyday ride...rain etc. then I'd keep the airbox. I have tried removing the cover from the airbox to get it breathing better and running the bike that way...but unless you have a loud system to disguise it, the resonation noise from the airbox is very loud and annoying. For performance I'd look at ditching the box altogether...you need to have a filter for the breather as well in that case. Saves a bit of weight as well. SR

The weight of the stock parts does start to add up once you start removing things.

Thanks.
It's going to be a everyday ride. Then I'll keep the air box, but will put a K&N filter in it. Kedo has filter that fits the box.
Thanks again.

pablosrfivehundred Ok, then. I just put on a Mikuni 36mm carb kit. An old White bros. kit I found on Ebay. Put on a UNI Pod foam filter and had a scary incident within just a few hours. Was riding and tuning , ect. The Bike back-fired thru the carb and the MAGNIFICENT UNI filter caught on fire and nearly burnt the whole thing down!
I couldn't get in to bat the fire out with my gloved hands because the d**n side covers wouldn't allow it. So, as the flames are licking at the fuel lines and tank, I did finally get it put out.
Rode back to the shop and spent the next 4 hours cleaning melted foam off everything and repairing fire damage!
No more UNIs for ME!!! I just ordered a K&N, which I usually use anyway. I just got in a hurry and the UNI was available here in town.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it! Beware of UNI foam airfilters. They work great til the going gets tuff. Mitch

Hi Mildmitch.
Point taken. I'll stick to a K&N filter that fits the original air box.
Hope you get it sorted.
Was hoping for a long dry autumn, but today the first snow came. 5 cm of it.

Yes, it's getting sorted. But it was a biit scary that day.
Should have the new KnN in a day or two. In the mean time I made a 5 inch velocity stack for the new carb (with screen). It's to open even with the freeflow exhaust, but it works for now. I'm sold on K and N filters, I've used them on everything I have, form my Roadster to my daily drivers. Can't get anything better. That's my 2cents anyway.
Christer Sorry to hear of your cooling weather. Last Thursday here it was 99 degrees when I left my shop to head home! A bit of unseasonal warmth! Usually 99 is cool during the summer here! So, I still get to ride for a while.

How'd you make the velocity stack? I was looking at doing something similar with a K&N sitting inside a gutted airbox with extra venting (for that semi-stock look). I couldn't figure out how to make the stack work as there's nowhere to bolt it to. Got a piccy?

Staffy, I'll try and get you a pic in the next couple days. I made the stack from exhaust tubing. Cut a slot at the carb end and (hose clamp) clamped it to the carb. Flared the intake end a little and tore the Stainless Steel screen from the old original air filter element. Shapped that to a 1/2 round shape and insterted into the stack. At least it will keep the big chunks out. Silver soldered the screen in a couple spots to hold. I'm looking for a K&N filter that will be suitable. Mitch
