I've just picked up a 78 2j2 but it doesn't have its original motor (serial No 4f3 000112) & its black except for the sides . The paint looks like its always been there . I've got the motor out & it looks like real factory type paint .Enlighten me ! I'm also going to do it up (topend) whats the go for the coin ?(that could be Westralian for value for money) or should I do the bottom end as well as I have no history on the bike at all other than it was a partser that I rescued from a fellow SR freak's shed.(It was an amicable decision to get another SR back on the road rather than let it rot taking up room in his shed any longer) cheers from Dave.

I've seen some 200-something model SR's with matt black engines. I was going to get one, but my TW was black and it was an absolute turd to keep clean.
I also remember seeing an all-black SR, a limited edition factory thing. Looked hot as.

Isn't that a great site! Not many models have the factories do that sort of thing for them. As you said there were a few 400s in black. That limited edition one was pretty good Marlon. Can't recall where I saw it...probably on the Yam Japan site. SR

Slightly off topic, but I found the pics of the limited edition one. Black calipers, black emissions stuff, wheels, seat... Hot loooking bike!

No matter what they do to them they always look good. But black is best for any bike.

The all black "Special" is pretty nice. I imagine Yamaha will have a anniversary edition in 2008...30 years

And if they do they should also bring out a cafe racer version.

Once you get the top end stripped off the mottor check for any play in the big end bearing and also check the fit of the gudgen to the small end. If these check out o.k move on to your cranks main bearings checking for any loosness and rough rumbly feel. There should be specs for all the above in the manual. I guess it comes down to how much you have to spend and what the bikes to be used for??? Generally the bottom end of the 500 is fairly robust and does not (usually)require a lot of work.
Top end i would go new cam chain (i paid about $50 for a D.I.D chain) Check rocker arm pads for wear as exhaust usually chops out. Check cam in something like a lathe etc where you can set up a dial indicator on the lobes and check the lift.Exhaust lobe also wears here (cam specs in manual) Measure bore and piston with a suitable instrument (micrometer etc)to see if a rebore is needed (see manual for wear limits) If a rbore is needed i would go for a Wiesco piston as they give you every thing -pin- clips- rings etc around $220 from memory depending on what size and comp. ratio you want. Rebore cost not to sure on as its been a few years since i have had one done.
Well Dave there is a few things to keep you down the shed for a while

Hmm black does look good , I was thinking of that look on that pic (paint the motor black & crossfile the fins to expose the ali ). I did that on a GPz I restored a few years back , it would be a lot easier than trying to strip all the paint off the motor too. Ive got plenty of work to do so a cut corner here n there would help ! Ive got to pull the motor down first anyway so I'm sure my mind will change a few times in the process . I wonder if the motor is out of a XT (does anyone with one know the serial No?) My serial No makes me think its a very early 82 motor as my other 82SRs No is 4F3-010634 & this one is 4F3-000112 I'm thinking XTs would have the 1st bit different ? Anyway thanks for all your replies chaps cheers Dave.

1981 XT 500H 4R9-000101, TT 500H 2Y0-000101, SR 500H 4R8-000101 Us numbers for '81 models from the TT500 muster website. Not really relevant to an Aus '82 model, but it sort of shows how things work. Looks like the prefix is the thing. Makes me think the 4F3 bit means they are both SR motors. Note they start at 101. Your 112 must be very early in the model run. Mick
