Has any one had expeirience with a lightened flywheel on the 500??
I have a couple of spare flywheels and was thinking about setting one up in the lathe and give it the diet treatment. The 500 does not lack any torque so i was thinking a lighter flywheel should make it spin up a bit quicker with out hurting bottom end torque too much.
I have performed this mod on small bore 4 strokes (125 honda) before and it made the motor more responsive and rev out cleaner.

Back a few years ago I seen a TT500 that was setup for racing in the VIPER (VMX) class in Victoria that was fitted with an internal flywheel ignition system from a YZ Yamaha MX bike. The owner said it would blast out of corner and accelerate like mad. It seams that this was a common mod for guys racing TT/XT, however, the problem of no lighting coils made it impractical for road use.
Harry Bell, from Wideline Engineering, in VIC, also fitted a smaller external flywheel system from one of the early 90's XT250/350 trailies to his TT racer. This system did have lighting coils but required some minor modifications to the crankcases to fit. Again, Harry said the resulting improvement in acceleration was good.
With the supply of XT250/350 in wreckers fairly good, it might be worth looking at fitting the whole system from one of these bikes as a safer option than machining down the stock flywheel.

Forgot to mention, that when Harry took his TT roadracing, he removed the flywheel completly and ran total loss battery points ignition.

with my poor english SR cranckshaft veights more than 1kilogramme more as TT cranckshaft . and the two engines are realy differents for that if you can ride a tt you will know if you like francis

Motor i am using is from an xt (points model). What i might do is lighten one and then install it in my xt500 that i use in the bush and take an evaluation from that.

Hi guys, it is a recgognised tuning option on dirttrack bikes. On slick tracks, youu use the heavier option and so forth. The internal rotor is the way to go, as they are easier to balance than an external rotor. Only a couple of ounces make a big difference in how the motor spins up. As far as i know xt and tt models have the same rotor and crankshaft. Cheers Franky b.
