Your advice please. I see lots of the twin feed rocker oil lines for sale. Are they a worthwhile or essential modification. your views and experiences really appreciated Thanks

I added an 'extra' line (the Thumperstuff 1-1/2 kit) and immediately noticed less noise from the top end, which tells me its getting more oil. I think every SR should have this (extra or twin line mod). My vote is "essential".

Yes yes yes Dont know how many 500 engines i have pulled down now and found the exhaust valve rocker arm pad chewed out due to lack of oil on the hottest part of the motor. Bit of a design glitch on yamahas behalf that one.(wonder if they fixed that on the SR400? ) Some people just mod the line to go the exhaust valve instead of both.Kits available to do both.

Are those 1-1/2 kits from Thumperstuff.com still available? Or is this something I can easily do myself? Is there a website with a how-to?

Just a thought on this , I haven't much experience on this but the other day I was looking at a head that had been striped down , The oil galleries look rather large in the head itself but the oil feed line is rather skinny and long which would restrict the flow I think . Do you think that a fatter oil feed line would have a similar effect as the twin lines , as I said just a thought what do you think?

I made the twin feed on my bike but you really need access to a oxy/accet kit or some thing simalar to do some silver soldering and a lathe/drill to drill and tap the plugs in the end of the rocker shafts to take the bango bolts for the oil lines.
Never seen large dia. hoses on these kits so i guess there is no benifit from it.I would think that the pump would only deliver a set ammount no matter what size feed line you had.

iv done this mod to my 78...years ago....it works ...do it!......i used a flexable hydrolic line with banjo fittings and made the twin fitting bolt at the botom end from a h/t bolt centre drilled and cross drilled to sute th banjo fittings..........if the kit is avalable end affordable do it....it sounds like much less work...

I've heard mixed things about the thumperstuff kits. Like Bize said, they've fixed it up on the 400, but I'm still looking at getting a twin line. Running the bike with the valve covers off, it doesn't look like the inlet valve gets much lubrication at all...

If you've got an earlier SR500, then you can easily buy the new SR400 oil line which goes to the exhaust side, and bolt it on with you existing line.
It still available through Yamaha parts. I've seen this set up on Stew's cafe racer and others, looks like it was there from teh factory (probably because it IS a factory part...)

Below are the pics of the oil line that i fabricated. I used the existing bango fittings from the original oil line by heating them with the oxy torch and melting the solder. The tee piece is a brass fitting drilled to accept the tube that i used. For the third bango fitting i fabricted one from brass on the lathe but you could quite easily get one from a wreck. The two rocker shaft plugs have to be driilled and tapped to suit the bango bolts(use the existing oil line bolts). The oil line was bent to suit and then the whole lot assembled and silver soldered together. You could most probably achieve similar results with flexable line but i used what i had lying around at the time. Not sure what the cost of buying the bits would be but if your halfway handy with the tools give it a go..
