I'm wanting to get an oil cooler fitted to the bike before summer, I need to get something from the cheaper end of the market, and there are some very affordable kits on eBay, but they're for approx 150cc bikes. Do I need to find an oil cooler designed for a bike of roughly the same cubic capacity, or does this not matter in the whole equation? I wouldn't have the first clue! Thanks, Matt.

Hi Matt Theres a post on the forum titled "Cool oil cooler" by Digiroc He's fitted a Honda XR400R motocrosser oil cooler to his bike .I've also done the same to mine , Do a search ,if you get a old set of sr oil lines the screw on fittings have the same thread as the Hondas so you can cut off the rubber hose and slip new S/S braided hose over the steel tubes or get aero fittings made up but there quite expensive . I have seen quite a few bikes fitted with a oil cooler mounted off to one side of the front down tube on the frame(see pictures of wizz,s bike in oran park post) Not sure if this is a kit that is still available or they have been adapted from another bike. I have a cooler off an old 600 suzuki katana that i am thinking of adapting to one of my bikes.

Mine is allegedly from a Yamaha FZR1000 which I liked as it mounts vertically. I had some brackets welded to the downtube and went to Pirtek to make up the hoses with fittings from Adrian at Vanem.
Not exactly a bolt on kit solution and quite expensive hoses/fittings, making the total cost near $450 including welding.
For the road, this would not be a practical way to go. For the track, it means I can easily get replacement hoses made up.

That example from Oran Park doesn't works quite nicely wit hthe aesthetic of that bike.
I'm hoping to keep things cheap, which is why those examples on eBay are tempting me. However, that XR400R example looks nice - I might get a price check on it.
Am about to fit a fixed alarm to the bike. Lot's of fun, these little mods. Am thinking about some subtley designed small but powerful fan for the engine in traffic, fitted to the forks and facing back at the oil cooler, but not sure if this would make any real difference. What do others think? This bike's my commuter, so it sits in traffic a lot. I was thinking it could be desinged to be fitted / removed quickly, used on particularly hot days.

A fan sounds like electric hassles. I loathe electric issues.
I think you'd be right without it in Melbourne, as long as you running a correct weight oil and keep it topped up and everything else is in reasonable order.

I think Digiroc's XR400 oil cooler looks the duck's nuts. Small and subtle, and it suits the bike too.

Hey you could use a computer type fan, runs at 12 volts and would be light enough to mount on the cooler itself, they come in all sorts of sizes and the bigger ones realy blow a lot of air , put a small cheep thermostat on the thing and its all automatic. The whole lot shouldn't cost much more than about $40 Cheers Mark

Much of my riding is two up and covers a lot of steep uphill climbs. My oil temp gauge rarely goes over 200 degrees and I think that is good considering how hard I flog the bike.
