Hi I'm using a separate oil tank on my cafe project ,but made a slight mistake . I put a 1/2 BSP threaded stub on the oil tank thinking that i could use a Triumph or BSA oil tank filter ,very similar to the filter thats screwed into the bottom of the SR's frame down tube but the Triumph BSA filter isn't BSP thread and I haven't got a clue what it is ? Does anyone know where I can get on of these filters in 1/2 BSP ? Also does anyone know how the oil system runs ? I know the oil enters the engine by the pipe near the front sprocket but does it go through any other filters BEFORE it enters the Oil pump ? I'll do my best to keep everything clean around the oil tank but I'm a little worried that foreign material could get into the oil and damage my new High volume oil pump . Anyone got a oil system schematic ? The only other SR I've seen with a separate oil tank is Stew's DCM & I think thats mounted below the engine ,if the oil is gravity fed to the motor how would that work ? I hope I can get some help on this one ,because it holding up my initial start up on the totally rebuilt motor ,which should be fun or painful as I haven't kick started a bike in 25 years Cheers LURCH

As far as I know, there's the screen at the bottom of the frame's down tube, (as you mentioned), the actual oil filter the the oil pickup screen. This is out of the manual for an '03 SR400. Hope it is of some help.

Thanks Bize Thats useful but I was lookin for a little more detail like does the oil go through the main oil filter before entering the pump ? I've also tried looking for a inline filter similar to a fuel filter but the one I have seen is about 8 inch long & I havent got enough room at the rear of the motor Cheers LURCH

I finally found what you are after. . . and going of the diagram, the oil goes through the pump (1) before going through the filter (2)

Bize YOUR A STAR MATE ;D ;D ;D ;D Thank you That confirms my fears ,now I'll have to get something sorted out to strain the oil before it gets to the engine , I might have to bite the bullet & take the oil tank back off & get it modified , There goes my beautiful powder coat job, huh
Anyone know of a small in line filter I could use ? Cheers LURCH

I'm using a separate oil tank on my bobber as it has a home built frame.
The Triumph threads will likely be Unified.
You need to keep a head of pressure on this type of pump or it will cavitate, that menas it will stop pumping without a positive pressure on the inlet. This is why there is no significant filter on the inlet side of the pump.
To keep a positive pressure the tank shold be well above the level of the pump.

Thanks Marcus That makes alot of sense ;D I see your not too far away from Coventry ,do you know where I might be able to find something suitable in the UK OR would it be OK to run without a pre-filter? BTW is there a Pic on the forum of your bobber ? I'd like a look at your oil tank set up Cheers LURCH

Well my oil tank came off another chop, and it had no wire mesh on the feed to the pump. But I don't like the idea and will be looking for something to use in there. If I find something suitable I'll post some pictures.
My bobber is still at the lining up the engine in the frame stage, the oil tank hasn't been set up up.

What about using an SR/TT/XT screen from the bottom of the frame downtube and modifying your tank to take that. They are longish, but not too long I reckon, unless you have a very shallow tank. They'd be fairly simple to come by from wreckers I imagine. The DCM...it was recommended by Dave Camier to prime the oil line fitting on the engine before starting it up. Having said that though, this one has never been done that way before and it seems to work OK. SR

Priming the oil system is important. All the air needs to be out of the lines after they have been open.

The screen at the bottom of the sump - where does that fit? Before the pressure side of the oil pump, or before the scavenging side?

The screen is shown in the first diagram...just behind the downtube drain bolt at '6'... SR
