Last night when riding home from work the old SR made a grinding rattling sound. Very loud...I could hear it clearly with a helmet on. Terrible sounds. I stopped the bike and thought...Oh oh...major disaster. Pushed the bike the last 2km. home. Must be getting old, I was beat by the time I reached my garage. Anyway took off the right hand engine cover and found a crescent shaped piece of metal near the kick-start assembly. Took it out and found the problem. A retaining or kick-starter stopper had broken in two. It's behind the kick starter assembly and held in place by three 5mm. bolts. Man..this could have been a major problem if this piece of metal got caught op in the clutch assembly and the rest of the moving parts. The inside of the engine case was chipped up. Anyway I've got a spare SR and was able to replace the piece, re-assemble it and the old girl fired up and is running O.K. Scary sounds though.

You did well to hear that and avoid the disaster. Any particular reason why you thing it gave way? Lose? just 30 yes of big vibes?

Metal fatigue I guess. It's an old bike with almost 70,000km. on it now. A few years ago the spring on the kick-start assembly snapped as well. I rode for a week without a kick-starter. Luckily, I lived on a hill and worked on a hill at the time, so bum-starting was easier.

It is failrly common for those to break...I have pulled engines apart and found them sitting in the bottom...hadn't damaged anything. SR

As Stew said, a fairly common problem.
I had a set of crankcases with a nice hole just above and behind the kickstart mechanism where the broken bit actually "escaped" from the engine. The hole has been welded up and the cases are now being used on one of my hot engines.
