A general consensus regarding the tapping my top end - including by my local BP servo attendent, who rebuilds bikes, and who made the customers wait while he analysed the noise for me! - has it either that it's my valve guides, or in my servo mate's opinion, the valve seats (unsure whether he meant that as a contradiction of the 'guide' analysis or not). I'm all for mechanically doing all that I can by myself on this bike. I also have almost no funds with which to do this refresh, so if I can do as much myself to save paying mechanical labour it will help. So:
a)If I remove the head of the engine myself and take it to the mechanic, they can work with that to inspect things, and also perhaps work on everything?
b)Or is it the sort of thing I can work out myself, and how? (re worn valve guides / valves / seat)
c)I'm guessing that re-seating the valve requires cutting metal bits? (a job for the pro, in my case)
d)Do the valve guides, which I understand to be like tubes inside which the valves sit / run, come ready to put in, or do I need to cut etc them for the SR? Also with the valves, are they ready to go?
e)When I replace the valves, are there things which I should in principle be replacing with them?
f)If a mechanic were to just do it all, what's a typical cost (roughly, of course) in labour for such a job?
Further, while I'm at it, with the engine opened is there a way to assess the cam chain, or does it need to be removed to do so (and am I right in assuming this means opening up more engine, and also that the cam chain comes already joined)?
Lots of questions, thanks in advance. This is a scary job for me, on this, my only transport, but so has every other job been till I did it - I'm suspecting this is something a mechanical newbie can do without too much risk?
