Hey fellas! Today I started doing my first service on SR400 myself - and even though I encountered a few problems (Which is why I'm posting here) the whole process is bloody satisfying. Anyway, all was going well until I tried to find Top Dead Centre to check the cam chain and the valve clearences. StewRoss walked me through it last weekend, but the markings seem to be different on the flywheel (Is that what it's called?) on my SR400. Instead of the lines hit has what looks like a "H" and then to the right of that, an "I" or really, just a line. Is this the TDC marking on the SR400? There's the line i'm talking about. So, if that is, you push the kick starter down until there's a lot of resistance at the top, spin the flywheel anti clockwise till you find the marking and whammo, over the other side to adjust out the cam chain adjuster till it's just short of flush with the screw. Then the valves... I remember it as being .6mm and .4mm - but I can't remember which! Also, Stew, I didn't have that funky tool you used to adjust the valves in my bike tool kit - I can just use a very small spanner though, can't I? Anyway, thanks for help in advance, and apologies for the thousand questions!

Hi Marlon, I've just returned from the NT....yes they're different to the 500's... I would say that the right side (marked blue) line is TDC...the next line is possibly low RPM ignition timing the left one full advance...maybe...seem a little close together to me but as the 400 has about 25mm less stroke perhaps that is right? To check the TDC mark put the bike on compression and remove the spark plug ... carefully place a long thin screwdriver into the plug hole and then gently turn the flywheel back and forward a little to se if the piston is as high up in the bore as it can be. Make sure the you hold the screw driver as near as possible to vertical to prevent it getting off vertical and catching in the plug hole as the piston moves... If the mark lines up at that point you're away. The plug clearances for the 500 are .004" (0.1mm) on the inlet and .006" (0.15mm) for the exhaust. More than likely the 400 will be the same...Akira?...or someone with a 400??? You can use a small shifter or similar to hold the adjuster so long as it has the same adjuster end. It'd be handly to have the correct tool. Look here for the Orange Boulevarde adjusters...perhaps the pic will work...I'm sure Vanem or Deus would get them for you. SR

Hey Marlon. Just about to post and Stew beat me - d**n, was going to show off some of my new knowledge! I find Dan a great (and entertaining) source of info (see his chapter on valves). He mentions both the screw-driver in plug hole test, and that if either clearance is greater it will be the exhaust valve. DAN'S ONLINE MOTORCYCLE REPAIR COURSE www.dansmc.com/mc_repaircourse.htmI've been in the middle of the same activities. I just placed a post because I couldn't get the lock nut loose to adjust the tappet. Let me know if you strike similar resistence (pun!) and what you do. -Matt
