Hello all,
I've taken delivery of the bike and it's now sitting in my garage :w00t:
there is definitely some noise coming from the engine, but how would one tell the difference between a valve noise or a rocker noise or a noise that would require a cam chain adjustment, whatever that would be or any other kind of noise for that matter?
Is it something for a trained ear only? would it be best for me to ask some one at a bike shop to diagnose or perhaps try to record a sound clip to be placed online for anyone here to listen to?
You have to diagnose the problem before you can go looking through a manual as to how to fix it...
Thanks again for all the help.

also, and this may depend on the problem, but does a clattery sounding motor just mean a loss in power or is it causing damage to the internals every time you run the thing?

Noises can mean lots of different things. I would suggest tuning the motor. Set the valve clearances, adjust the cam-chain if necessary and if there's still unusual sounds you might be able to determine where it's coming from. A mechanics stethoscope is good for that or just a long screwdriver. If you put the tip against the motor and your ear against the handle, sometimes you can isolate where sounds are coming from. SR's are kind of noisy and rattling sounding anyway, even when in good shape. A buddy of mine who rides a Honda 400-four thinks my bike sounds really noisy and ticky compared to his silky-smooth Honda. Cheers!

Find a buddie with an XS650. If your SR500 sounds no worse than the XS650, you're fine. miker

Hello I just wanted to share my experience with my sr5oo. After completely rebuilding my engine from the bottom up I was horrified to hear my sr rattling away. After double checking all of my valves and cam chain adjustments I was sure that I had installed something wrong and that my engine was tearing itself apart from the inside. Taking apart the engine revealed that there was no wear on any of the new parts . What I found out was that the aftermarket performance piston I put in from Wiesco was notoriously chattery and sounds like your valves are loose no matter what you do. The engine runs great but sounds like a diesel and I haven't had any serious problems so far.

I dont know what brand piston is in the bike now, but I do know that the previous owner said it was bored to 540cc's. Perhaps that could be attributing to the noise. I haven't started the tuneup yet. I'm still working on my forks...
