Hi all I have a 1978 SR 500 that has 5200 miles on it. I have always thought the valves were a little noisy. So today I took the time and adjusted the cam chain and adjusted the valves, (.004 in, .006 exh) now they seem to be even louder. A very tinny sound. What could be wrong? I am going to let it cool overnight and recheck tomorrow , just wondering if I missed something. Thanks John B

hi john,first of all these things do rattle a bit but if its got worse after tinkering try this:- get the bike up to temp. then carefully increase the pressure on the cam tensioner but make sure the slotted end of the screw is still got a slight bit of movement.still rattling bad?the linings on the tensioner guides could be worn out possibly by to tight an adjustment by previous owner.valves:-the tops of the valve stems can bed themselves into the rockers making feeler settings a bit misleading,go a bit tighter [try 2thou on each]but waggle the rocker by hand to make sure you have at least got some clearance.i've tinkered with these things and made improvements but dont be misguided here,you will never totally get rid of ALL the rattle,if you do you have overdone it and something will give way e.g burnt valves or bust camchain.hope this helps.

Thanks Andy I am going out to recheck my work. How oftem do you change oil? I mostly ride in town about 120 or less miles a week. I was thinking of no more than 2000 miles on oil and filter. Or should I go less. Oil change is a cheep thing to do. John

Went back out and reset the valves and boy I must have had shakey hands as both were off. Now it isn't too bad thanks again JohnB

yeah john,2,000 max for me too,oil&filter.forgot to mention,do the cam tensioner while the bikes ticking over and listen carefully for an improvement.your gettin there by the sound of things.
