I saw a picture in a European website of a SR500 that had an emblem on the sidecover that said SR500-SP. I have also seen old advertisements from Yamaha for this bike. Doe's anyone know what this designation means? Did Yamaha produce a limited edition model? A factory upgraded bike? The only difference I could see other than the emblem, was that there was a high-volume oil-line on it.

canucksr, looking at that Japanese site, the bottom right hand picture shows 2 graphs, 1 for the 400sp and one for the 500sp, I would tip SP stands for something like "street performance" or "sport pack" ie different cam, carby, valves maybe ? Just a guess! swordfish81

I believe the SP's came with factory-fitted rear sets.
(I don't know how else the SP's differed).

Hi all, as far as i know, the sp designation on yamahas meant sport production. It was basically an upgrade of suspension and so on, sort of like a limited edition thing. Cheers franky b.
