Morning all. I go motivated on the weekend, first one I've had some free time for a long time.
Took the SR for a longer jaunt than usual, and did get stuck sitting at some traffic lights for a while, which is when I noticed smoke blowing out from the motor under me.
Closer inspection shows fresh oil on top of the cylinder head, on the front right, around where the decompression valve?? activates. I never use the decomp so I dont know why it would be an issue all of a sudden. I did take the bike for a longer ride than usual, and if it hadn't had time to heat up at the lights, I wouldn't have noticed.
Any ideas on what I may be looking for? Why would oil be blowing out of the head? and am I looking at something really serious?
Hard to diagnose from a distance, I'll try and get some photos. Almost want it to blow up so I'm forced to have it re-built. My motor has been making some freaky noise since I've had it, so maybe I'm extra paranoid.
Thanks in advance.
Steven.

There is a breather hose that goes from the top of the motor to the oil tank. Maybe its cracked or has come adrift? Mick

My bike leaks oil from the tachometer cable junction at the top of the motor. After a long ride there's always some oil around that area.

Gives me a couple of things to look at, thanks.

Have a look at the seal on the decomp shaft and the valve cover seal as well. Shouldn't be anything drastic at all... SR

...looks like my tacho is barfing up oil as well. is it an o-ring issue? I just had the same issue with my tach cable. I discovered it was leaking oil after a recent ride. I pulled off the tank to check it out and found the cable was routed with a pretty sharp bend in it, I re-routed the drive cable for a more straight in attachment to the head and it has stopped the leak there at least for now. The tach cable receptacle in the head has a seal, but it looks like you have to take the top of the head off to push it out. Does anyone know how to pull it out without taking the top head casting off?

Where the tach cable enters the top of the engine, there's a circlip that can be removed with some needle-nosed pliers. Then the cable should pull right out. There's a rubber "O" ring on the cable that supposed to seal the cable in place. At least that's the way it is on a 1979 model.

me and my bike live in seperate places. my bike lives in the country at a freinds house and i live in a city -- point being we spend little time together -- to be prepared for my next visit would i need a new tach cable or can i just get an o-ring to roll over?
thanks for your experience.

You should be able to replace just the "O" ring. But I'm not sure what size it is. On my bike, I put some heavy grease around the "O" ring to help sealing, but it still seeps oil a bit. My bike also leaks at the clutch arm on the left-side of the engine. Anyway, I figure it's no big deal having a couple of minor (very minor) leaks.

i haven't checked mine yet, though minor oil seppage never worried me. However, when I'm sittn gat the lights with smoke billowing out from under me from hot oil on the engine, its more of a worry.... I've been laeving/returning when its dark this week, and no lights inthe yard, so I'll have a look tomorrow.

Following my cool oil cooler addition (see link below) I found that the tach cable was leaking oil again. This time I followed canuksr's advice and replaced the O ring and greased the new one liberally before installation. I have not ridden it yet, having just done this while the tank was off for my oil cooler pictures. I'll report the results after some riding. sr500forum.proboards38.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=Engine&thread=1184336931

Well, i had a look on the weekend, and thought I'd check the plug............hmmmm
Black as the ace of spades at the bottom of the abyss. Not a "running rich" black, but oil pumped up inside the plug, saturated with sump-black oil.
I don't know much, but I think I have some good top end issues, most probably rings
Hard to diagnose obviously over the web, but any ideas? Its been making some funky noises for a while, so I think its pull apart time, which I probably wont be able to even try to do myself, due to lack of space, work commitments, and not least current knowledge ;D
Bugger it.

Hi, It might also be well worn valve guide seals as well...that's not a huge job but in all cases the engine has to be removed to be acomplished. SR
