Well I was putting the finishing touches (as usual) on replacing my oil filter and a few gaskets on my new SR, when the lovely aluminum that holds the drain bolt on the oil filter cover couldn't take the strain of my hulking arm muscles. So the bolt that you drain the oil out of the oil filter compartment doesnt have threads to bite on anymore. Is heli-coil my only option? I was trying to wait til this winter to pull the engine and overhaul it. How much stuff do I have to pull to get to the piece that has the threads in it? The bolt seems somewhat snug in there but I dont know if it can take the "thumping" of my engine for long. Any experiences with this? Aaron

The two top bolts are threaded right into the engine case. The shoulder bolt on the bottom of the filter cover is threaded into the engine cover. The right-side cover can be removed easily after the kick-starter, rear brake pedal and footpeg are removed. If the bikes on the sidestand, you hardly lose any oil. Heli-coil should work fine.

I got lucky. My bolt pulled the threads, too. On closer inspection, I found that the bolt , which the local yamaha guy insisted was the original, only went past the drain hole about 2 threads max. I found that after cleaning out the bits of metal, I have about 10 mm of good thread, so I just bought a longer bolt. It has hung together for over a year like that. I suggest you have a close look at yours and see if you are as lucky as I was. PS, I did not over tighten, the threads came with the bolt when I undid it for its first oil change in my ownership. Thanks for the info guys. I guess I will first try a longer bolt. If that doesn't work, I will try an SAE bolt a tad bigger. Then I will helicoil if all else fails. This winter when I tear it down I will definitely helicoil it. Thanks again. BTW, anyone know where I can get torque specs for an SR? aaron

Look through this site for the "Links" section. On page two of that section is a link to a manual.

It not an uncommon problem for the allen screws for the oil filter cover to strip, I have had it happen with a couple of my bikes and have used "RECOIL" thread inserts to fix them. Its not a dificult job to put in the inserts, just remove the clutch cover, mask up the clutch and primary gears with a plastic garbage bag and duct tape so no swarf gets into the engine, the drill out the hole and follow the Recoil kit instructions.
