Hey everyone! I'm doing my maintenances, just trying to make my well running, first kick bike a little more dodgy like I always do, I've just got Valve timing and cam chain adjustment to go.
Thing is, my manual says you're to take of the left sidecover, and there, to match the 'T' mark on the timing buddy (is that the flywheel?), there should be a little notch in the engine block. I have no notch, no recognizable irregularity to match my T, F, 20, 30, or any of the other things on this wheely deal up to. What I DO have is a little magnet looking thing, which I figure is the tacho's way of measuring. Am I at TDC (or wherever I need to be to do the cam chain adjustment) when the magnet is under its little reader? and where the heck's my timing mark?
Thanks, Davey

If you're really in a bind, you could use the piston stop method to find tdc / and create your own timing mark.
This won't help with ignition timing, but will get you set to reassemble / do your cam timing.
I actually made a piston stop out of an old spark plug and a pice of dowel. I tried it out on my sr, and it was dead on ( mine has the marks ).
You will have to create a mark on the case to go by if there isn't one. You put the piston stop in, so the pitson can't go all the way up; rotate the crank in one direction until it hits, and mark the balancer ( or alternator cover ) in line with the mark on the case. Then rotate it the other way until it hits ( be gentle ), and mark the cover again; then TDC is exactly halfway between.

Hi Davey Have you removed the gasket from the engine case ? When I stripped my motor I thought there wasn't a mark on the case ,but a little closer investigation revealed that the old gasket was stuck fast & it covers the cast pointer ,try scraping off the old gasket with a razor blade & I'll bet you'll find it ,Its in the 12 O'Clock position on the lower surface of the top crankcase it looks like a raised V about 2mm proud .I cant see how it could be damaged or removed for any reason. Sorry I cant post a Pic at the minute but My PC went Bang big style last week & I'm just borrowing a mates Laptop till it fixed & haven't got any photo software installed Hope this helps LURCH

wowo! Lurch, you were right! I had NO idea there was a gasket there, it's completely sealed in with the case.
Thanks a ton for the advice everyone.
now, is there any reason to replace the gasket if I haven't damaged it at all? it's just really, really old (like, original...)

Davey Should be OK to re-use the gasket, its there to keep water & crap out ,a thin smear of silicone gasket should do the trick Best Regards LURCH
