I ordered a new oil filter from my local auto store, but it was not the same filter that was in the engine. I tried to fit the new filter but when I tried to put the cover back on, there was a 1/8" gap between the cover and the engine. It seems like the filter was too long. Here is a pic of my current filter, it looks the same front and back: And here is a pic of a similar filter I was given at Advance Auto Parts, however the actual filter looks like it had a slightly longer collar on it: K&N shows the filter to look like this: Could anyone shed some light on this situation? I need to ride!!

I'd like to see another pic of your current oil filter to see what the other end looks like. The current Yamaha part # for the correct oil filter is 4X713440900, and the pics you have posted of the HIFLOFILTRO and the K&N look correct. One looking at the top, and the K&N looking at the bottom. Those are what your filter should look like. I'm wondering if the wrong one has been in your bike?

edit: I just re-read your post and realized you said it looks the same front and back...

Dude, Your new filter looks correct. The K&N looks like it is missing the locating tube, but would probably still work. The filter that came out of the engine doesn't sound right, it should not be the same at both ends. I have an XT and an SR, and so far I have seen 4 different brands of after market oil filters. They all look like the middle photo, and they all only fit one way. That little tube at one end of the filter is the inboard end of the filter, and is meant to fit into the hole in the engine, right inside the oil filter recess, and serves to locate the filter and deliver the filtered oil to the engine. Before you fit it, you should be able to look in the tube on the inboard end and see the inside of the filter, if my memory serves me well. Oil flows from the outside of the filter into the middle of the filter, out of this tube and into the engine. The other end should have a flat o-ring on it. There should be no hole for you to look through into the inside of the filter. This end should look like a solid steel plate, but if you press on the steel in the middle of this o-ring, it should actually be a little spring loaded plate. THis is a one way by pass valve, its purpose is to let oil through this valve if the filter itself is too blocked to allow oil through. This only happens if the oil filter is so blocked that the oil pressure differential across the filter is so high it can push this valve open. This end of the filter faces out wards, and contacts the cover you took off to get the oil filter out. If you look at the inside of the cover, you will see that there is a raised ring on the inside which pushes on the o-ring on the outboard end of the filter. This ring has three segments cut out of it so that, in the unlikely event your filter becomes blocked, the oil can flow to the afore-mentioned by pass valve. Of course, if your oil ever gets so dirty it blocks the filter, you need a good spanking for failing to properly care for a classic motorcycle Lay you old and new filters side by side. IF the actual bodies of the filters are the same length things are cool. Then just make sure you put the thing in the correct way around. I wish I could remember how much it makes the cover stand off from the engine case. If it didn't need to pulled down just a little bit, you could never be confident that the oil filter o-rings are sealing against the engine. I hope this advice helps, rather than confuses. Mick

Apparently I assumed (I know..I know...) that the filter wouldn't fit. After working a bit eveerything seems to be just fine. Thank for the hlep. Good thing I'm still a "new guy" otherwise the shame would be intolerable...I wonder how long I can hold onto that claim...
