Hi, I'm the new owner of a 1981 SR500h and have put about 300 miles on it so far. I gave the bike its first oil and oil filter change change while in my possession today. After draining the oil and replacing the oil filter with a fram and replacing the drain plugs I added two quarts of valvoline 20w-50. I started the bike and checked to make sure oil was coming out of the air bleed screw, and warmed up the bike checking for any leaks. When I stopped the bike and checked the oil, I was surprised to see that the oil is just a bit over the minimum level despite just adding 2 quarts. I have owned the bike for about a month and I haven't had any problems with wet sumping until now. Any ideas? Thanks for your time, Josh

Hi Josh , nice looking SR , sounds like you've done it right . If oil came out of the bleeder & it shows on the dipper you've done well . It will possibly only take another 100-200MLs to top it right up . When they wet sump there is no oil in the frame tank . When u do a filter & oil change its quite possible for a few MLs of oil to go awall . I'm not sure about the 20/50 see what the others recon . I use a 15/40 semi synth , have no dramas . Cheers Dave.

Thanks for clearing up wet sumping Dave. Didn't take much oil to top it off.
Thanks, Josh

Glad to help , I severely wet sumped a XT550 years ago . Forgot about the bleeder ran it , checked it , topped it again & went for a ride . There was oil everywhere when it finally hydrauliced , it just spewed out of all places it could . I'd just done a major gearbox top end job as I recall all for nothing as I had to do it all again (talk about learning the hard way). Use this site at all times when in doubt give us all a shout ! Cheers Dave .

Best way to deal with oil is only check it immediately after a ride. Then the scavenge pump has had time to do its thing and you get a true level. I use Castrol GTX 20W50.
I sometimes check before a ride to see how much the level changed since shutting it off last ride - that will tell you if your anti-wet-sump valve is really leaking.
