I have recently been working on an XT500 I got a couple months ago. I was in the process of replacing the seal around the shifter because it was leaking when I pressed the shifter stalk(or the part which is parallel to the crank) in. It did not go all the way in and I was able to get it out and re-engage it with the other shifter components but I think it is a couple notches off. It now only shifts between neutral and what I believe is first. Is there some way to re-engage it properly as is or do I have to tear the crankcase apart? I know I should take everything apart and give it all a once over, but I don't want to get into the guts right away. Thanks for viewing and sorry about the wall of text.

First of all, welcome aboard! I posted on your Thumpertalk vintage bikes post. I'm having the same issue with my TT500, and dug into it today. I posted what I found over on the Thumpertalk site. Take care and again... welcome!

Hi, There should be a circlip on the shaft outside of the seal to stop this but I guess you had it off to replace the seal...to make sure you can remove the clutch side cover and look up behind the clutch. There are alignment marks on the mechanism...bit of a pain but you can do it in the frame and you don't need to split the cases at all. SR
