Got the oil strainer cover off (see my reply in holmesboy's post titled "Got the S$%ts" in General Discussion for the back story ) and this is what I found... Guess the cast alloy can fatigue over the years from tighening/loosening of the drain plug? At least I found my oil leak ;D Gary Hopwheels

You mean you're not supposed to use an 8ft. handle on the wrench to torque down the plug? As for SSY, that's exactly where I ordered mine... then I found a spare in a box in the garage today... oops . I'm a doof.

The leakage comes from not replacing the crush washer. It should be changed every oil change. Although, you can reuse it a few times. On some bikes the threads just get stripped out, a little easier to fix. On my Norton gearbox I tapped the hole out with a NPT tap.

It was a brand new plug and crush washer. Went with a set of the magnetic ones, I'm sure eneryone's seen on eBay. A small crack could have been there already, and then sitting the motor on the garange floor when I was rebuilding the top end could have finished it off. All that weight and all. I'll be using the motor stand I have from now on that's for sure.

Hi, I reckon a lot of this damage probably comes from overtightening...use a torque wrench if you are able... 22ftlb (max) Hopefully that will prevent the problem. SR

Looking at my bike the other day- I sourced my leak to the same part, but there's so much filth I cant see where the actual leak is. Thanks for the info.
