I have a 1980 model that I had the carb cleaned out and it starts up fine and will idle fine until I drive it around the block. As soon as I come to a stop it'll want to die on me so I have to throttle it to keep it running. Once it stalls, it won't start for me until 10 or 15 minutes later... Does anybody know what my problem might be?

Quite apart from all the questions about whether the vacuum operated fuel tap is working, etc, there is something that happened to a little outboard motor I had. This thing had a built-in fuel tank. I'd start it set off down the creek, and after a while it would just die. I'd sit for a while, then it would start and away we would go, only to have the whole lot happen again. Turned out there was a little in-line fuel filter under the cowl which was almost completely blocked. It would fill the carby over the course of 10 minutes or so, which would give me a couple of minutes running until the carb ran out of fuel, then I had to wait for it to refill. Would you happen to have an in-line fuel filter, or perhaps a filter in the fuel tap which is causing a starvation problem? Mick

Same thing can happen with blocked carb or tank vents - once suction gets too high it quits, then when the vacuum bleeds off after a while it will run again. Also a boat thing. miker

I actually have heard a guy tell me about the tank vent being clogged and it starving the carb... The previous owner said he experienced the same thing and that he thought it was a flaw in the charging system. Could that be a possibility?

Could well be, definitely sounds like a fuel starvation issue to me.

Did you actually open up the carb, remove the jet, and see if the jet is clogged Dave? I had the same issue with my bike. I used a torch tip cleaner to clear out the jet.
