Hi All, I am new to the world of SR-500's. A while back I bought a 1978 SR-500 for a project bike. Then as all good deals happen I bought another (for parts). Well the parts bike is to have 4000 miles on it. Tonight I started working on it to see if I could get it to run. The previous owner tried to put on a different carb. I bought an original off ebay and started to install it tonight. But I notices that the oil tank was almost empty and when I tried to spin it over (with the compression released) I could hear a gurgling or bubbling (for a lack of a better word) coming from the breather tube. I also kicked it faster and a little oil came out the tube. The other one doesn't make these noises. What might be wrong and what should I do to correct the problem. Thanks in advance. John

The sump could be full of oil. These engines are supposed to have oil in the tank and only a minimum amount in the sump. There's a ball check valve in the right engine side cover thats responsible for keeping it under control. This is called "wet sumping" when the oil drains down into the sump while the bike sits.
Not a fatal flaw. Drain the sump and see if you get a lot of oil out. Refill the oil tank and try to start it then. Many SR's do this to varying extents. Do be careful to not wind up with way too much oil in the system, as it will definitely come out somewhere.
