Alright people, what am I doing wrong.
Its been 12 years since I last had a kick start bike, and that one I was in sync with.
Now, I just bought an SR500, 1978 model. As is always teh case when I went to pick it up, I could start it no worries, one kick. I trucked it home and had to meet other commitments.
Now when I got to fire her up, I'm getting no love at all.
I don't think the battery is flat, as I was having no dramas before, however it was a once a week short run bike before.
The fella I bought it off thought he had it tuned a little rich, and told me to be careful easing on the throttle at low revs as it wold flood somewhat. I'll be checking the plug this arvo for some diagnosis there also.
So short of me pushing it up a blood big hill in the nieghbour hood and rolling back down to try and start her up (which by the way didn't work yesterday, I just got a hlaf fire, then nothing) what do peole suggest?
Am I just ot of sync with htis old girl and haven't found my groove yet?
Any suggestions much appreciated.
PS It does have a decompression lever, but the blinker console isn't originla and its set up so I can't depress it. I'm not familiar with decomp levers at all so any advice regarding these would also be appreciated.

Milkman. Absolutely necessary to have a decompression lever that works. Here's how I start my 78. Cold- Full choke, no throttle at all. Kick, gently, onto compression, use decomp lever to ease just, and I mean just, through compression. Get a new full bite on kickstarter and boot it fast as you can, but do not let foot slip off, as the kickstart lever flies back up and can actually bounce around enough to hit your side cover. Once it starts, you sholud be able to ease off the choke as the revs build over a minute or so.
Hot - If just turned off, no choke, no throttle, just find compression and ease just through compression, then get a full bite and boot it. If it won't start, try the hot start button on the side of the carby. This cracks the throttle open about 1 mm, which is all you need to increase idle from 1100 rpm up to nearly 3000.
If the bike has been sitting long enough to cool off a bit, you can always try a little bit of choke. Its not really a choke, its an enrichment circuit, and it seems to be able to adjustable from none to full enrichment.
I suppose if you have patience and a strong leg, you could ease the bike through compression without using the lever, but, on mine at least, that would certainly take some effort. Hope this helps. Mick

Definately get your decomp lever working. I'm sorry for your frustration, but helped in my house. My wife just started riding our SR 500 today, and felt a little better after seeing she's not the only one with a little problem starting the bike up. (I use it as my daily ride, and don't usually have too much trouble.)

Thanks lads.
I'm sure its going to be one of those things where I'll get someone to look at it, and it'll bloody start first go!! They only never start when your mates/wife/parents or anyone who wants to criticise is watching.
RD I'm in Rozelle, so traffic depending not too far, or quite a while. hahah Shite house Sydney roads. I'm often through Sylvania on my way back to my home town past the 'gong, so when I get fired up I'll have to come show you.
I'll have to source and original blinker housing. I have one the original owner took of my bike but its bloody crusty and I wouldn't trust it.
I wasn't aware of the hot start button, I'll have to get my hands on a manual, or print one off.
As another point of interst, the owner before the owner I got the bike off was a member of the SR500 club, so my old girl might be someone on this forums previous ride. Originally she was black, and she's done about 70,000 k's.
Thanks for tips everyone.
