Hi Ive just bought a 500 motor to replace my 400 , more thump ;Di'm in the process of striping the bike for a complete nut & bolt rebuild
Having read posts on "wet sumping" how much oil should come out of the crankcase ? the bike was started yesterday then left overnight & I drained the oil while the motor was cold ,doesn't matter because the motor is being stripped anyway .I have measured the quantity of the drained oil and its about 600cc . Is this normal or is the motor wet sumping ? I'm not familiar with dry sump motors Thanks in advance LURCH

Hi Lurch, I can't attest to the quantity that comes out (never measured it), but you will always get oil coming out of the sump on a full drain. The most oil that will be in the tank (frame) is after a run, when it's nice and hot. This is the best time to drain it out. Flows better as well. I've never had a problem with wet sumping on any of the SR's...my brother has with the Matchy and AJS's though...but that's another story. SR
