My bike is acting up. Heat is clearly an issue, but I'll just list the symptoms. Maybe you all can help.
Bike is just back on the road from replacing the stator. Battery appears to be fried. It won't charge while the bike is running and there is no juice to the lights etc unless running.
But here's the real issue: In the morning, the bike seems to be idling low. - 1000 rpm In the afternoon - in the extreme heat - the bike wants to alternately idle @ 3,000 RPM or quit entirely. The engine feels starved for gas at higher revs (highway riding).
None of this ever happened before replacing the stator, but it may be coincidence. My first thought on the freeway yesterday was that I had screwed up the timing, but I got 80 miles on it before this started.
So... any ideas?

Hi there,
The first thing I would try is connect up a good working battery and see if that solves the problem.
The battery acts like a buffer in the electrical system and if yours is not performing this function that may be the problem.
Of course the first thing to check is the existing battery connections, and be sure your current battery is actually "fried".
Good luck.
Cheers, Mikec.

cool - thanks, I'll replace the battery today (and check all the connections) and let you all know tomorrow.

Well the bike ran fine with a new battery except for a stutter when I held it wide open on the freeway. Of course the heatwave broke today too so I wasn't riding in 115 degree heat either... So what do you think is causing the stutter at full throttle? Anybody? I've got an aftermarket exhaust system on it, but stock airbox and filter and stock jetting in the carb.

If the aftermarket exhaust is more free-flowing than stock, maybe the bike's running too rich because it's not breathing in enough air. The stock air-box is pretty resrictive. My SR500 has a single walled head-pipe with a Supertrapp silencer and I tossed the stock air filter and put in a K+N filter, pulled the snorkel off the air-box and discarded the air-box cover completely from under the right sidecover. I had a top-end problem similar to what's described and after the air-box changes the bike pulls strong up to about 90 - 95 mph.

Yeah, my pipe is WAY less restrictive - single walled pipe and a very simple baffle in the slip on. I've been thinking that I need to put a good filter set up on it, but I was afraid that I would have to do some "minton mods" to the carb afterwards and I just wasn't up to the effort. But I'm thinking it's time. Thanks again.
