I seem to have broken some internal metal pieces that are intregal parts to the kick starter. I was kicking the bike over yesterday and all of a sudden after a kick the starter lever stuck in the down position and would not return under its own power. The only way to get it back up was to manually pull up on the lever and it was not easy to do. So I took it apart this morning and there are two metal pieces that have broken. One piece is bolted to the engine case by 3 10mm bolts( it looks like a quarter moon shape behind the kick starter gear), the other piece that broke is part of the kick starter gear assembly (ratchet wheel, I think). One of the tabs has broken off.
Was I kicking to hard? Or are they just old and worn out? Parts? Would a Yamaha dealer have this stuff?
Any input from anyone that has had this happen would be great. It looks like an easy fix if I can find the parts.

Should be able to get parts from a dealer. I had a similar problem once except it was the kick-starter return spring that broke. I bum-started the bike for a week while I waited for the parts to arrive.

Hi, It is common for that 'half moon' shaped piece to break...I think that it is the internal stop for the kickstart...I think....
You'll often see people removing the clutch side cover and finding it sitting in the bottom....without having known it had failed...
I think that the new SR's have a different type of arrangement in there now....

Hi Guys,
The part you are talking about is the "ratchet wheel guide" p/n 583-15674-00, according to my newly aquired SR500 parts manual.
Cheers, Mikec.

Hi, I looked at a recent model Japanese parts listing and it seems that the newer ones are still of a similar design...
Easy thing to replace anyway...and fairly inexpensive....'ratchet wheel guide' eh, OK, I'll remember that...I do recall nothing untoward happened in the engine while it was broken...
