Hi guys Can anyone enlighten me, why when I have brand new oil pump rotors does the oil escape into the sump when the bike is left for a couple of weeks. This bike has had this problem since I bought it but I assumed that replacing the oil pump with a new one that has nice tight tolerances would solve this, however no such luck it is still the same it just takes a little longer to leak away. Hi Rich, Unless the bike blows tons of smoke on startup I wouldn't be worried about it. You have to have the engine warmed up to check the level; pumping it back up to the tank. Invariably it is very low or off the dipstick when you check it after the bikes been sitting for a while.
If it's not causing any problems forget it I reckon.
I see lots of stuff on the thumper page about SR's wetsumping...but I've never found any significant problem on any of mine.
...Although on a slightly different topic, often excessive oil usage and smoke on throttle opening after overrun, can be put down to valve stem seals...but other than this I've found the SR's (and TT/XT's) to be ultra reliable..even after modification.

Thanks Stew I just find it interesting that my brand new 1980 SR never did this but my worn motor on this bike did and still does even after spending more money on it than my wife knows about. Completely rebuilt crank, rod, mains and g/box bearings, JE 90mm 11/1 piston, Carl Batey's #3 grind cam(brings the power in really low down), reshaped combustion chamber, inlet and exhaust ported, rockers with the stellite pads and repositioned oil jets and as stated before new oil pump rotors etc. If she ever finds out how much I,ve really spent I think the FZ1 would be sold to pay for it. and just to think theres still a long way to go.
