have a fully stock 1980 sr500 g with 2000 miles on it. have checked the valves, adjusted the 32mm carb, plug burns fine, timing is right on. bike starts fine hot or cold. problem is that after bike initially starts and intermittantly with no warning and being no where near the throttle the bike will rev really high for a moment and than just as quickly back down to a normal idle. any ideas. am considering buying a new mikuni carb, but to this day have not found anyone or anyplace that can tell me the right carb, exhast, airbox combo and if someone can, then nobody sells the stuff anymore. if anyone has the right carb, exhaust, airbox available for sale lemme know. i really like this bike but frustration is setting in and if can't get it right will end up selling it. help, and thanks.

Check for intake air leaks, like around the rubber carb mount (engine side). Also possibly some of the rubber diaphrams inside the carb, under the covers?
I doubt this calls for a new carb. Most likely an intermittant air leak somewhere - it leans out the mix and makes the engine rev under no load. Sometimes spraying WD40 on joints (like between the carb and the manifold) will give an indication, if the engine speed changes when you spray.
