I can't believe this is happening. I have just undone the three bolts that hold the oil filter cover on my SR.
An oil change can't actually be a bad thing can it?
The thread came with the bottom one. (no, its not a heli coil)
The hole goes way past the drain hole in the oil filter space. That is the hole is drilled horizontally into the case, then a hole is drilled down from the top (inside the oil filter space) to intersect this. This forms the drain set up. The bolt that came out of it only just reaches past the vertical hole. Maybe an eighth of an inch. When I poke a wire in the horizontal hole that the bolt goes into, it reaches at least another inch. The bolt has a shoulder on it and is way shorter than the other two.
I see one of two scenarios:
a) the bolt is meant to be longer, to block the hole off past the vertical drain hole and was only grabbing by one eighth of an inch of thread - meaning the whole time the bolt was only just preventing the oil draining out of the oil filter space back into the bottom of the engine, or
b) the bolt is meant to be that length, and it doesn't matter whether the bolt screws through far enough past the vertical drain hole to block off the rest of the whole.
If anyone can help me by either measuring the length of their bolts, or if they have a side cover on the bench and can tell me whether horizontal hole actually goes anywhere, maybe even connecting to the oil pump or something, I'd be most grateful.
I must be starting to look like a very hamhanded mechanic, but I maintain all the damage has been done by previous owners, I just happen to be on the receiving end.
Regards Mick
