I have a SR500 that hasn't run for a number of years, but when I start it, oil pumps out the breather. I'm thinking stuck rings, doesn't appear to be overfull. I'm trying to avoid stripping it down. Any clues anyone?

That's pretty strange having oil pump out the breather. Maybe the oil filter or strainer is clogged up. You should check to see if oil is being sent to the top-end. Loosen the oil line bolt a bit and check for oil flow. You could also remove the bottom cover of the motor and clean out the strainer.

Hi Guys,
This thread might not still be active but I bought an SR that came with a cracked piston, blew oil everywhere.
Just another thought.

Swordfish, it does sound like broken/stuck rings or piston. Blowing oil out the breather is a classic sign. Have you done a compression test or leak-down test? Bronson7

Hi, New owner, first time poster. I have the similar problem. So essentially your saying stuck rings/broken piston = blow by? But the bike runs OK. I rode 20 miles on the highway (70-75mph) last night to get it home from the guy I bough it from. The lower rear portion of the bike was covered in oil, (I’m surprised I got home alive.) I assumed it to be coming out the make shift breather cover. It looks like the previous owner used a rubber tube and what looks like the cap from a rattle can of paint. what is a leak down test? I know compression but not leak down. Ok. If stuck rings: remove cylinder/ loosen rings/ and reinstall? If Cracked Piston: replace

OK, I'm reposting this because the oil I'm seeing is coming from the bottom of the head and the right side engine cover(not the breather as i earlier thought). anyone have a vague idea how much it would cost to have new gaskets put in from the cylinder gasket up. I'm also thinking if i have it apart... i might as well have the cylinder honed and new rings put in. I'm thinking i could probably do all this myself. the only tool i don't have is a ring compressor. anyone overhaul their engine?
