Hey mates ;D I have a front and rear rim that I just pulled out of storage. I believe they are from a XS650, but its been a while and I bought them separately. When I unpacked them today, i noticed that the front is a 19in rim and the rear is a 16in rim. Is this possible to match on a 1980 SR500? Or do I need to get an 18in rim for the rear? If it is possible, would it look strange on a scrambler or street tracker look? Thanks for your advice, guys. Pics are below. Original 18in rear and 16in spoke rim (looks like its missing a bearing and would I be able to find a compatible sprocket?) 19in front and 16in rear

Well, a skinny 18" tire and a fat 16" tire are almost the same outside diameter so the question becomes will a fat tire fit on the rear? You'd have to make some careful measurements or test fit a 16" tire in order to tell for sure but it looks to me like the tire will fit in the swing arm but won't clear the chain guide and the arm going to the brake caliper. Keep in mind that a 110/90-18 tire is only about 4 1/4" wide but a 130-16 tire is about 5 1/4" wide which is quite a difference.

That rear looks like a 36 spoke 16" rear off an XS650 Special II, steel rim, 1979-1981. You'll be able to find sprockets but standard is 34, kind of small for an SR. The axle is 20mm instead of the 17mm of the SR so you'll have to adapt that, and you'll have no cush drive. And (speaking as an 81 XS650 owner) about any tire you get will rub on the chain AND the brake backing rod. There's not much room on an XS, probably less on an SR.
Don't know what that front is - its a 40 spoke (XS650s are 36).

40 spoke wheel may well from an early disc brake Honda, 750, 500, 450 etc....not sure I'd go for 16" rear. It all depends on the style you're after I guess. SR

My .02 - First I have spent a lot of time looking at street tracker pictures to determine how to build mine. I bought an '80 XS650, which has discs front & rear, mag wheels, but has a 16" rear wheel. I have decided the 16" rear does not have the right look. I picked up my '78 SR500 for $175 with a seized motor, and lots of rust to start my project, and will soon sell the XS650. I also liked the fact that it will weigh nearly 100 lbs (45kg) less.
Guys - in reading this site and other XS650 sites, most of the information on wheels leads me to believe an SR500 18" rear is not a bolt on to the XS650. So, I doubt an XS650 16" rear will bolt up to an SR-->?

The earlier 650s...not the Specials...came with 18 wire spoked rears...still you have the hub now...you could get it spoked up into an 18" rim... SR

Thanks Stew,
I may just bid on a XT TT 500 rear wheel and see which will be easier to adapt to the SR.
If I decide to use the 650 Special hub, will I have problems finding its equivelent to a stock SR500 sprocket?

No,you shouldn't do...the XS hub has a smaller bolt pattern than the SR and that should give you a larger range that you can fit...certainly larger range than can be fitted to the SRs wheel. Finding a sprocket to suit the SRs gearing should be simple enough... As someone reminded on another post, if your bike had a drum at the rear to start with then it is all a very straightforward process...if it had a rear disc then in some ways it's simpler to get a swingarm from a drum SR and also get the pedal pivot as well...you can weld up things like I did of course...I usually run a cable operated rear drum... Depends a lot on how much work you want to do. SR
