The bike is now completely stripped down to the frame, except the swing arm is still attached. How do you remove it. All the other swing arms I have removed have a long bolt, like an axle bolt. This appears to be somewhat different. If I had a manual, I probably wouldn't be asking this question, but it won't be here until next week.
Thanks!

Heh, heh...no worries. The pivot is comprised of a through axle with a nut at each end. That passes through the centre of a steel sleeve bushing that pivots in needle roller bearings that are pressed into the swing arm itself. There are needle bearing thrust washers positioned at each end of the ends of the swing arm. The axle can be hard to remove if it's been in for a long time. For one way to remove it look here: www.warouw.com/sr500act/?Articles_%26amp%3B_Info:Helpful_Hints:SR_swingarm_pivot_bolt_removal_using_the_%27puller_method%27%21Be patient and don't be tempted to bash the blazes out of it and mushroom the end over. Good luck. The pic shows the Japanese market bike with the grease nipples on the pivot...yours probably won't have that...but it shows you what I am talking about. SR

Well, I forgot to post back. My swingarm axle was too far gone (rusted) The pull through trick did not work. I started stripping the thread from all the torque. So, I pounded it out and of course wasted it!
What axles can be used from other bikes that may be an easy and cheap find? Otherwise, where can I find a new one?
Thanks!

I don't know anything about cross-referencing, but Mark at Thumperstuff is the man. Just google it to get the number and part number, but don't place the order online. Well worth the effort to give him a call. He's not great at checking his email, and he is great with hints and tips. If you live in the USA, he is the only guy you will ever need to order from.

Thanks for the reply. I just got through ordering $300 worth of top end parts from Mark, and will order more from Thumperstuff for sure. One initial point of contention: I mentioned to Mark I was rebuilding the topend of my SR due to a stuck exhaust valve. This site has helped me identify that this is a common problem that can be fixed via one of Thumperstuff's dual feed oil lines to aid in exhaust valve lubrication. Mark never once mentioned it and it would have been $50 more in his pocket.
Now back to the swingarm shaft/axle. I am having a tough time paying $55+ for this part from Thumperstuff. I am going to post another thread asking what I can use instead of a stock shaft/axle.

1st, I've never actually met the guy, and he does not pay me for advertising for him.
He asked me if I had the second oil line the first time we talked. He's also really really big on the braided front brake line. I know I need it, but I'm just too poor.
When I did my swingarm, I was able to reuse the axle. I was very happy with the results though. WHen I got the bike the steering head bearings and the swingarm bearings were shot, so every ride was quite an adventure.

I 've just this minute come in from fitting new bushes to my SR, I wouldn't be so sure that XS650 bushes would drop straight into the SR swingarm. Anyone done it? Certainly the central bush is different as I compared the new spare XS650 part I have with the one from the SR.
I bought a new swingarm pivot from Yamaha for my street tracker project, expensive, but the threads are 20mm, and not the narrowed down 16mm version that was posted on here. It is drilled for grease nipples. This type was for the late models, but is now used on all models according to Yamaha

Just wondering whilst were on this subject(we are now anyway) Has anybody tried or had any success turning up a new set of bronze bushes to replace the very expensive genuine parts? I spent about $400aus on the parts & I think if you were handy with a lathe it wouldn't be a biggy .Grease is cheap so I couldn't see a problem if it was well lubed cheers Dave.PS I stripped my parts bike today & it didn't let me down the pivot is seized solid!

Well has anyone been able to verify whether the bushings from Mikes XS are the right size to fit the SR?

My guess is yes the bushing will fit, but only a guess. I sent Mike an email regarding swapping axles between a XS650 and my SR and he said he did not know.
I did just buy (e-bay) a XS400 axle to see if it will work in my SR. Mark at Thumperstuff was kind enough to measure the diameter of a XS650 axle for me and it is the same o.d. as the SR =16mm. I am just not sure about the swing arm I.D. on the SR versus the XS650 though.
I do have a 1980 xs650 in my garage that I originally bought for my street tracker project. I could tear into it, but it would just be a hassle because I am just going to sell it when the SR is done.
I will post back whether or not the XS400 axle is a go or no go.

I asked the same question if bushings will fit the SR over on sr500.de thinking someone there might know but they removed my post. I guess they aren't to friendly when it comes to answering questions.
