I know coil bind is not the correct term for these but that essentially what the problem was.
Two weeks ago I decided to install some progressive style fork spring from Mikes XS. The Progressive website lists the same part # for both the XS650 and the SR500 and the dimensions listed on the Progressive chart and on Mike's were the same. At $46 USD for Mike's springs I figure that is a good deal.I was putting new fork oil at the same time and as I screwed up my liquid measures I went for the measure from the top of the stanchion method. I put a jack under the front wheel and proceeded to push the fork sliders all the way up.The fork gaiters installed by the previous owner compressed into a solid piece of rubber about 2 1/2 to 3 inches thick. I measured the fork travel from fully extended to full gaiter compression at just over 3 inches. I buttoned everything back up because I didn't have the stock dust boots. I ordered the boots from Mike's and just installed them this morning and reset the oil level. there is only about 5/8" from the top of the dust cover to the bottom triple clamp but I do have my full fork travel now.
I guess the reason I wrote all this( I type with 1 finger so its a lot for me) is to caution other forum readers to check things out before they buy gaiters or slide the forks up too far in the triple clamps. The PO of my bike had the tubes up about 1/2" in the clamps when I bought the bike. I was riding around with less than 3'' travel when first got the bike. Yikes!
A pleasant Sunday to all, Bill
