Okay, I now have the front end disassembled, cleaned, refurbished, and ready to reassemble. Now I have one question: I have a new set of tapered bearings and need to know if I should reuse any of the cone/spacers needed for the original ball bearings. Thanks

Hi not sure what the cone spacers. New tapered bears come with the bearings & the new taper to mount into the frame. The other tap out. The new ones before you install them put them in ice or snow (i'm in N.H.) and lack of anything else use a hair dryer to warm the neck frame of the bike. Then with the old part you removed from the frame, carefully tap the new tapers. Took about 2min, after I stopped procrasinating. Have fun & good luck. D

Thanks, davewfc603! I've done this before on my Triumph but the set up is just different enough to make me ask. I now have the tapered races in the freezer! Where are you in NH? I visit my in-laws up there a few times a year. They are about 30 min west of Laconia. ATB, Kevin

Hi, I live in southern NH but we have a place 35mi east of Laconia near Conway, lots of great backroad riding. Visit my profile & send an email Dave

Hi, It's well worth doing the mod. Transforms the steering. One thing to consider is the inner diameter (ID) of the headstem. The ID of the lower bearing race is almost the same as the ID of the step in the headstem and once fitted there is not much, if anything, of the lower race protruding into the hole in the headstem. This makes a problem if you need to remove it later. I found that by grinding a bit of a relief into opposing sides of the step in the headstem (maybe about half of the width of the step) you made later removal much easier when using a drift from the top. Thanks for all the help. I installed the races, bearings, and lower triple clamp last night. I'm almost finished cleaning and stripping the top clamp for installation later today. Stew, great suggestion about the lower race; thanks!

Hey Stew, the guy from Thumperstuff (I'm currently brainfarting his name away) told me of the same trick. I read another way on KTMTalk's forum. Clean and degrease the lower race, then weld a big washer or bolt to the race. I've tried it your way. It worked, but it still wasn't easy. Next time, I'll break out the mig.

Weld a big washer onto the race, hmmmm Ime it is not advisable to weld on to a bearing race, it may warp or even crack, then just try to source that alone without buying another whole kit. Just Dremel in the divots each side in the neck so the punch nose can get a purchase next go round (for somebody).
